GOOD EATS: Fresh ingredients make Husson's stand out
HUNTINGTON -- Husson's Pizza is a Charleston-based chain which has won over a loyal customer base thanks to their chewy crust, unique sauce and quirky low-budget TV advertisements. Nick Husson opened his first restaurant in 1978. Today, there are 10 different Husson's locations, mostly in the Charleston area. The Huntington shop, located at 335 Hal Greer Blvd., first opened its doors in May 2005.
"I was actually a student at Marshall at the time. A friend of mine told me we had to check out this one building," said George Bsharah, owner/manager of Husson's.
The building's prior client had been the state Democratic Party which had rented the space short-term to serve as a local headquarters for the 2004 election.
"We knew how great the location was, so we came in and we threw everything we had into it to get things off the ground," said Bsharah, a nephew of the chain's founder.
Husson's is primarily known for its thin-crust pizza made with fresh hand-tossed dough. A thicker-cut "Sicilian style" crust is also available.
Pizzas range from a starting price of $8.62 for a 12-inch junior to $13.49 for a 18-inch large. There are also specialty pizzas including the Husson's Vegetarian, the Husson's Hawaiian Pizza, the Husson's Meat Monster and the Husson's Deluxe (pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, green peppers, mild or hot peppers and black olives). One of the most popular items is the two-slice combo, served with a drink for $5. Pizza bread, wings, cheese sticks and submarine sandwiches are available along with traditional calzones and stromboli. Customers can also order 2-liter bottles of soda with their pizza.
Diet-conscious customers are offered a variety of salads to chose from. There are also some unique items for people on low-carb diets, including the "Pizzadilla," which is a Calzone made with a tortilla rather than traditional dough.
"I think we have a very unique pizza with a sauce we make ourselves, our ingredients are all fresh, and our dough is made every day," Bsharah said. "We pride ourselves on giving excellent service. I think if you are consistent with your product and offer excellent service you cannot go wrong, and that is what we strive to do. We will gladly do large orders, and we can work out special deals."
Husson's Pizza is open from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; from 11 a.m. until midnight Fridays and Saturdays; and noon until 11 p.m. on Sundays. Hours will be expanded to midnight on weekdays and 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturday after Marshall University students return.
Husson's Pizza makes free deliveries to most of the downtown Huntington area. Discounts are available to schools and church groups placing large orders for parties.
