GOOD EATS: Prichard Sandwich Shop a workday stop
HUNTINGTON -- First opened in 1999 by co-owners Sandra and Tim Parsons, the Prichard Sandwich Shop has become staple of many downtown residents' workday.
"I've developed a nice clientele of customers over all these years," Sandra Parsons said. "The majority of my business comes from the employees of the Corp of Engineers, Amazon.com and other businesses in the area."
According to Sandra Parsons, the secret to the shop's success is hard work, low prices, quality food and polite customer service.
"We try to great everyone as they come in," she said. "I think my business is strong because everyone knows that the food will be fresh made and good. I have never had to pay for any advertising all of these years due to good word of mouth. I really have wonderful customers who come in and keep bringing people in with them."
Each day, the Prichard Sandwich Shop has a different super special for $5.66. The special includes a sandwich, chips, a drink, a side and dessert. Signature sandwiches include The Prichard (made with bologna, turkey and ham) and The Herd (chicken salad and ham). All sandwiches are served on a choice of wheat, white or rye bread supplied by Heiner's Bakery. All side items such as coleslaw, macaroni salad and fruit salad are made fresh in the shop each day. The shop is also famous for its pinto bean soup, which is served with a side of corn bread. During winter months, fresh tomato soup and chili with vegetables are added to the menu.
Like many small restaurants in the Huntington area, hotdogs are on the menu. Each Friday, customers can get a hotdog with toppings for 89 cents.
"There's no coupons, nothing. You can just come in on Friday and get as many hotdogs as you like," Sandra Prichard said. During the rest of the week, a combo consisting of two hot dogs, a side of chips and a drink is offered for $3.77.
The small café is also known for its desserts, which are made fresh onsite. Popular items include cheesecake, brownies and "Ice Box Pie" made with mandarin oranges and crushed pineapple. The most popular dessert item is Sandy's Peanut Butter Pie, which is made every day.
"We don't open the shop without our Peanut Butter Pie," Sandra Parsons said. Special order whole pies are also available.
The shop also offers breakfast. Egg, sausage and bacon sandwiches are served on a choice of biscuits or toast These range in price from $1.29 to $1.89. There is also a ham, lettuce and tomato on toast sandwich for $2.99. Breakfast items are served all day long, but a discount is applied to many of them between 9 and 11 a.m.
"We have just gotten by due to good friendly service, good food and good people," Sandra Parsons said. "We try to deal mostly with local suppliers like Heiner's Bread and Logan's Meat. Because we're small and family-run, we keep it simple, and it works great. I feel very, very blessed for having my shop as long as I have."
The Prichard Sandwich Shop is located at 603 9th St. It is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. The shop is closed on weekends. Cash and most major credit cards (no Discover cards) are accepted. For more information or to place an order, call 304-360-3678.
