September 03, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

BARBOURSVILLE -- A local pizzeria chain with 40 years of history, Giovanni's Pizza has been a longtime favorite in the Huntington/Barboursville area.

Giovanni's is known for its traditional pizzas and hoagies. In a crowded market, the restaurant has continued to carve out a dedicated customer base despite having many local and national competitors. The chain, which has locations throughout the Tri-State, is currently run by Jeremy Spears.

"We try to run the best specials as we can and treat our customers right," said Maggie Bailey, store manager of the Barboursville location. "So hopefully they come back. It's hard when you have five different pizza shops here in Barboursville alone. We have a huge variety of customers. Our largest group is seniors, but we also get a lot of orders from elementary schools and high schools."

The chain offers pizzas in a variety of sizes ranging from a 7-inch cheese for $5.59 to a 19 inches for $14.99. Additional toppings such as pepperoni, Italian sausage and mushrooms add $1.09 each. There are three signature pizzas, a deluxe with a little bit of everything ($27.53 for a 19 inches), a meat lovers ($24.99 for 19 inches) and a veggie ($24 for 19 inches). The most popular toppings with customers are pepperoni with sausage and pineapple with ham.

The restaurant is also known for its submarine sandwiches which vary in price from $4.69 for a pizza bread to $6.79 for a chicken sub. The restaurant's signature sub is the Big Red ($5.97) which features grilled steak, mushrooms, peppers, cheese and a unique sweet red sauce. Another favorite is the hot ham and cheese which goes for $5.48.

The restaurant also offers a selection of appetizers, salads and pasta dishes. Customers can enjoy baked spaghetti or lasagna for $7.49. Salads range in price from $4.59 to $7.29. Antipasto is another popular option for $7.29. Appetizers include bacon and cheese garlic bread ($4.99), hot wings ($7.09) and bread sticks ($4.29).

"We do a lot of special orders for local businesses," Bailey said. "If you're planning a party or a big event we can work with you and try to give you the best special that we can. One of the signature specials is the family special, which features a 19-inch two-topping pizza, breadsticks with cheese and a two-liter bottle of soda for $22.99."
