GOOD EATS: Sandwich shop prides itself on quality, service, low prices

January 21, 2010 @ 12:00 AM

First opening its doors in 1999, the Prichard Sandwich Shop was founded by Sandra Parsons.

Parsons retired in June of last year following 10 successful years of running the shop, which is located at 603 9th St. Today, the shop is run by Lora Blankenship, sister of a longtime employee. During the course of Parsons' ownership, the small lunch canteen developed a reputation for low prices, quality food and polite customer service, something that Lora Blankenship aims to continue.

"We tried to make the transition about as smooth as possible," Blankenship said. "Sandy wanted to make the transition as smooth as possible. I came down for about three weeks and worked with her before she left. She wanted someone she knew to run the store, who had been in the food business before. Because she had a good little following, we agreed to keep the business the same. We didn't change the menu much other than adding a couple of things."

The most popular new addition to the menu is a Philly steak sandwich for $4.49. A favorite menu selection remains the daily Super Special featuring a choice of one of two different sandwiches along with a soda, a bag of chips, a hot or cold side item and a dessert, all for $5.66. The sandwiches available change from day to day. Perhaps the store's most famous item, Sandy's famous peanut butter pie, is available for $2.50 per slice. Blankenship claims it's the best in town. All side items such as cole slaw and macaroni salad are made fresh in the shop each day. Another popular item at the shop is pinto bean soup, which is served with a side of corn bread for $2.89.

"We had the walls repainted last year, so things would look a lot brighter," Lora Blankenship said. "It used to just be tan, but we added some white and yellow. I'm going to have a mural painted on one of the walls. I waited a few months to make sure that I got the food right and getting to know the customers before we got to work on the interior of the store."

Hot dogs also remain a staple of the Prichard Menu, topped with homemade chili and fresh chopped cole slaw. Hot dogs are available for $1.69 Mondays through Thursdays with a special on Fridays offering them for 99 cents each. Customers also can enjoy "Triple Decker" sandwich for $5.99, or a combo for $6.99. Signature sandwiches include The Prichard featuring bologna, turkey and ham or The Herd with chicken salad and ham. The restaurant features an assortment of salads for $6.99.

The business also does box lunches for local businesses or parties.

The shop is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. The shop is closed on weekends. Cash and most major credit cards except Discover are accepted. For more information or to place an order, call 304-360-3678.
