Chubby Chief's offers pizza by the slice
From regional favorites like Monty's and Husson's to national chains like Papa John's, the citizens of Huntington and the surrounding communities certainly have no shortage of pizzerias.
Entrepreneurs Jason and Tiffany Wickline are hoping to grab a slice of the market. They recently opened a second location of their Hurricane, W.Va., based restaurant called Chubby Chief's in downtown Huntington. The first Chubby Chief's opened in Hurricane about two years ago.
"Our pizza is totally different. Our 'Yellow Dough' recipe is unique, and there's just nobody around here that has something like it. It's a top-secret recipe with a lot of flavor," said Jason Wickline, co-owner of Chubby Chief's Pizza Company. "It's a thin-crust pizza that's crispy if you get it while it's fresh."
The store also offers a more traditional hand-tossed dough, he said.
"We named the place after my wife Tiffany's grandfather Arthur Meeks. He owned A&L Hardware up in Hurricane, and all the people who worked there called him 'The Chief,' " Jason Wickline said.
Tiffany Wickline said business is good in the Hurricane location.
"We're both Marshall students, so it just seemed natural to come here," Tiffany Wickline said.
The store offers pizza by the slice during lunch and late night hours. Currently, the store is offering 99-cent slices for the first month of operation. Whole pies are available starting at $6.99 for a small 10-inch cheese to $16.99 for a Big Chief 21-inch pizza. There are also specialty pies ($11.99 medium, $17.99 large). Varieties include Buffalo Pizza, BLT and Hawaiian. There's also a Mexican Pizza topped with taco meat, lettuce, cheddar cheese and fresh tomatoes.
"We acquired this building about a year and a half before we opened. We actually had to put in a whole new heating and air conditioning system, and we had to put in plumbing for bathrooms," Jason Wickline said. "They had to cut up the concrete floor to run the pipeline to the new bathrooms. We found a brick wall behind some sheet rock on the left side. When we got in, there was piece of the wall loose, and you could see the brick wall behind it. We liked how the brick wall looked, so we exposed it all."
In addition to pizza, Chubby Chief's offers an assortment of sides and appetizers, including jumbo-sized buffalo wings, onion rings and breadsticks. Customers can also enjoy hamburgers, submarine sandwiches, salads and calzones.
"Our most popular specialty pizza so far has been our Buffalo Chicken Pizza," Jason Wickline said.
