Charleston's Quaker Steak set to expand
CHARLESTON -- Quaker Steak & Lube was established in 1974 by George Warren III and Gary Meszaros when they turned a closed gas station in Sharon, Pa., into a restaurant.
The two restaurateurs being fans of old muscle cars decorated the new restaurant with license plates and old muscle cars. Today Quaker Steak & Lube is a popular chain of family casual dining restaurants with 36 locations in the United States as well as one in Canada. Each one carries over the theme of antique cars and automobile racing with a wide variety of memorabilia and automobiles as well as motorcycles on display.
The restaurant was also featured in an episode of "Man vs. Food" where host Adam Richmond took on their "Atomic" wing challenge. The menu also offers a wider variety of burgers, salads, sandwiches and steaks.
The restaurant is famous for offering buffalo wings in a variety of different flavors ranging from a cool ranch sauce to the infamous "Atomic" and "Triple Atomic" sauces which actually require customers to sign release forms. Triple Atomic clocks in at 500,000 Scoville Heat Units.
The Charleston location of Quaker Steak & Lube first opened in January of 2006 and is gearing up for an expansion. A secondary location will be opening soon inside of Appalachian Power Park. While the new restaurant won't be full service, it will have many of the chain's favorite items as well as a full bar. The new location will be opening to commemorate the first home game of the West Virginia Power's new season on April 12.
"The deal with Appalachian Power Park came very quickly," said Jennifer Stanley, assistant general manager of the Charleston location. "My owner just told me we had the deal and let's get down their and open it. We're still working out the hours of operation. We're bringing our wings, salads, and wraps to the stadium with good prices and specials every day of the week. We started working on the new location about three weeks ago and it will have the sports and car feel from the main restaurant. It's been a lot of work in a short amount of time."
According to Service and Bar Manager Jay Nelson there's a number of reasons why the restaurant is so successful.
"We've got great people, great food, and great atmosphere," he said. "Everything about the restaurant is inviting. People always have a good time when they come. We have some fantastic steaks including a New York Strip. Our ribs are also very tasty. We have a lot of new items such as our grilled salmon and shrimp bowls. We're also offering some more healthy items like an Jalapeño Ranch Chicken Wrap. We have something for everybody."
