Sandwich Joint is small, but robust
HUNTINGTON — Downtown Huntington has a new sandwich spot. The Sandwich Joint opened its doors in February of this year.
Co-owners Jimmy Eubanks and Jumol Scott are veterans of the local restaurant scene. Eubanks was a kitchen manager at Chili Willi’s before the duo decided to open their own restaurant. Scott’s grandfather was a successful chef.
While small, the Sandwich Joint offers a robust menu featuring salads, wraps, and of course a variety of sandwiches. The sandwich shop also has an outdoor smoker for barbecuing meats.
“We smoke all of our meats and all of our sides are homemade,” Eubanks said. “All the bread for our sandwiches comes from Brunetti’s Bakery in Kenova, and most of our meats are supplied by Logan’s. We cut and smoke our own meats. We don’t buy pre-made anything. Jumol and I have a lot of experience in this business. We just sort of sat down one day, started brainstorming some ideas and tried to put together some things unique that the other places aren’t selling. In the next week or so we’re going to make another menu change. We want to try different things all the time.”
Every day The Sandwich Joint features a different daily special for $6.50. These include pork chops on Tuesdays, barbecued ribs on Wednesdays, chicken on Thursdays, and a fish fry each Friday. Each special comes with two sides such as fried cabbage, macaroni and cheese, pasta salad, black beans and rice, macaroni salad or homemade coleslaw.
Popular sandwiches include the Classic Club ($7.50,) Jimmy’s Philly ($7.75,) and Jumol’s pork BBQ ($6.00.) A favorite is the Cuban ($7.25) sandwich made with smoked pork loin, ham, swiss cheese, mustard and pickles served on Challah Bread. There is also a Chicken Salad Sandwich ($5.75) featuring homemade chicken salad served on a croissant. For Jumol’s pork BBQ, pork shoulder is smoked in house.
“We introduced a kind of ridiculous sandwich called The Ultimate Club for $15.50 as a gimmick just for fun,” Eubanks said. “It’s a huge sandwich that looks like one of the ones Dagwood makes in the Blondie comics. It was kind of a joke, but the next thing I know people are ordering it.”
The Ultimate Club is a 4 layer sandwich made with ham, turkey, pastrami, lettuce, tomato, apple wood bacon, mayo, cheddar, havarti and Swiss cheeses.
On the lighter side of things, the menu features a Southwest Turkey wrap ($6.75) and a House Salad. ($5)
The small shop also offers a mix of catering options ranging from fruit and vegetable platters to barbecue. All catering orders need to be made 24 hours in advance.
“For us it’s like toys. We love being in the kitchen,” Eubanks said. “We have a basic smoker right now. We’re getting ready to get a larger professional smoker. We’re actually in the process setting up a vendor trailer and we want to do fairs, regattas.”
The restaurant also gears to the late-night weekend crowd.
“We are also opening up late on Friday and Saturdays evenings to catch the bar crowd,” Eubanks said. “We’re serving these baked potatoes topped with pork barbecue that are really nice. We also have a tex mex version with chili and cheese.”
The Sandwich Joint is located at 417 12th St. in downtown Huntington. It is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays and 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. Late night hours are 10 p.m. until 4 a.m. Friday nights to early Saturday mornings; 10:30 p.m. until 4:a.m. Saturday nights to early Sunday mornings.
