Sweet & Sassy baking up gourmet treats
BARBOURSVILLE — Things are looking a little sweet over in Barboursville for the mother/daughter co-owners of Sweet & Sassy, a new bakery specializing in gourmet cupcakes and catering.
The new cake shop opened in November of 2012.
“We came to this location the day before Thanksgiving last year,” said Sassa Nibert, co-owner.
“There was previously a bakery here called Delight Yourself that closed when the owner decided she just didn’t want to run it anymore. We had been operating from home for a while now doing specialty cakes and catering for weddings. We just kind of waited until we found the right spot.”
Nibert runs the bakery with her mom, Annette Campbell. Nibert is a graduate of Marshall University with a undergrad degree in sculpture and a masters degree in art education. She also runs her own art studio at 112 Main St., in Barboursville.
The shop specializes in an ever-changing selection of gourmet cupcakes ranging from traditional flavors like Red Velvet Cake to more exotic like Andes Mint and Churro. Nibert also seems to enjoy giving the cakes interesting names like “50 Shades of Chocolate” and “Oh My Ganache.” The cupcakes are $2.75 each, but there is a discount on ordering multiple cupcakes.
Customers can also order custom-made cakes for weddings and private parties starting at $3.50 a person. The shop also has specialty cookies and breads.
The shop can also make more elaborate sculpted cakes.
“I’m making a cake for a pig roast today that’s going to be a pig with an apple in its mouth,” Nibert said. “We also do painted cakes which are normal cakes with a design painted on them with a paint brush and food coloring. I really like the sculpted cakes because they’re something different from what everyone else does, and I have an undergraduate in sculpting. We once did a Disney villains cake with Ursula from ‘The Little Mermaid’ with her tentacles draping down over the cake. Someone also wanted a cake that looked like a Michael Kors purse. We made it look like an actual purse and painted it to look like distressed leather. We had it on the counter and people actually mistook it for someone’s handbag.”
