Crumpets & Tea offering mix of brews, luncheon fare, sweets

Oct. 31, 2012 @ 11:45 PM

HUNTINGTON -- Initially established at Heritage Station in February 2010, Huntington's tea room Crumpets & Tea moved to its current home at 926 4th Ave., on Nov. 1, 2011.

The location also became the home of Adell's Antiques, Framing by Jenks and an artisan gallery.

"Dave Coster was also at Heritage Station and Jenks was over there with us," said Karen Shook, who partners with Trish Burns in running the tea room. "When this space became available we realized it was too big for any one of us, so we thought going into business together would be a good thing. We started to move in mid October. Before we came in there was a place called Global Liquidations and there was a bath and kitchen shop before then. We were able to get our own kitchen from what was left of that kitchen shop. We now have a bigger kitchen and we can seat about twice as many people as we could at the old shop. The new location is also handicap accessible, which was something of a problem at Heritage Station."

For a flat fee of $10 customers can enjoy an entree, soup, salad and a dessert. Entrees include chicken salad sandwiches, quesadillas and quiche. Each week there's also a special "comfort food" available such as meatloaf, zucchini casserole or stuffed pesto chicken. Different desserts are also available each week such as pumpkin bars and chocolate crunch cake.

Of course no tea room would be complete without a variety of hot and cold teas.

"We use Stash teas exclusively," Shook said. "They are a premier brand from Oregon that we think is one of the very best. Earl Grey is of course one of our favorites. We also offer a variety of flavored teas. We also brew two iced teas a day, a traditional and a flavored version."

"I would say all of our teas are popular," Burns added. "It would be hard to say what the most popular one is. My personal favorite is the spiced peach tea."

In addition to teas, the shop also has strawberry lemonade and a special blend of coffee created by The Old Village Roaster across the street.

"We have a very nice regular clientele," Shook said. "We have a lot of weekly people who come in. We are very lucky to have them. We also have new people who come in. We also do a lot of special events. Last Friday night we did a bus trip that was coming in to ride on the train. We did a church group the Wednesday before, and we had two birthday parties on Saturday. There's also a regular group of customers who play bridge."

Crumpets & Tea will be hosting a Christmas themed afternoon tea Dec. 29. Reservations for the event are now being taken. Traditional English savories and sweets will be offered.

Crumpets & Tea is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. It is closed Sunday through Tuesday, except for special events. Cash, check, Visa and MasterCard are accepted.
