Diner offers old-fashioned favorite eats

HUNTINGTON -- It's harder to get much more old-school than Cam's Ham.

A old-fashioned diner dating back to the 1950s, Cam's Ham was founded by Cambell Hagge and has been in the ownership of the Grubbs family for nearly 30 years. Today the restaurant is co-owned by Tim and Shari Grubbs. It's also home to an eclectic mix of Coca-Cola and NASCAR memorabilia.

The diner's signature item remains its original sugar flaked ham sandwich which is served on a toasted Grecian bun and topped with a sweet and tangy sauce. A regular sandwich sells for $2.79 while a large goes for $3.49. Other popular sandwiches include Cam's Roast Beef, a hickory smoked beef barbecue, and a double-patty hamburger called The Big Beefer.

"Our onion rings are homemade every day," said T.J. Grubbs, manager. "Our homemade beef barbecue and roast beef with homemade coleslaw are very popular. I think part of the reason we've been around so long is that no one has quite the same thing we have. A few people have tried to make their own versions, but they're not quite the same.

"I think the fact we're a family business makes us more passionate about it," Grubbs added. "If I wouldn't eat something I wouldn't put it out. I think the reason people keep coming back year after year is the consistency. I would like to thank our customers for being so loyal."

For the winter season, Cam's offering white bean soup ($1.59 for a small cup, $2.54 for a large) and chili ($1.79 small, $2.59 large).

"Shari makes the chili homemade every day," Grubbs said. "It's a seasonal item and we sell a lot of it in the winter months. It's a classic chili with beans that's not too spicy."

Cam's Ham is open from 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. It is closed on Sundays. Cash and all major credit cards are accepted. For carry-out or more information, call 304-522-7012.
