Tropical Moon offers popular frozen yogurt

Sep. 29, 2011 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Frozen yogurt first became a nationwide craze in the 1980s thanks to the popularity of chains like TCBY and I Can't Believe It's Yogurt.

In recent years the frosty dessert has seen a resurgence of popularity as chain stores like Pinkberry, Orange Leaf and Red Mango have become increasingly popular. Huntington now has a new frozen yogurt shop on 4th Avenue in downtown named Tropical Moon. It located near the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center.

"Frozen yogurt is still very popular," said Edwin Lake, owner of Tropical Moon. "The new store is a concept my wife and I came up with. Every time we would visit another city we would like to stop for frozen yogurt. We wondered why there wasn't one in Huntington, so we thought we'd put one in. We did a lot of research to try and find everything out before we proceeded."

Edwin's wife Kim Sarka Lake is an entrepreneur in her own right and is the is owner of the shops Mug & Pia and Simply Whisk in downtown Huntington.

The store offers 12 different flavors each day ranging from classic standbys like vanilla and cake batter to more exotic flavors like pomegranate-raspberry. Most varieties are fat free, though the store usually offers a sugar-free flavor and a non-dairy fruit sorbet. A wide assortment of toppings can also be added. These range from hot fudge to fresh fruit, to chocolate chips and Captain Crunch breakfast cereal. Once the yogurt has been poured and the toppings are added, the cup is weighed. The yogurt sells for 44 cents an ounce.

"We started construction of the building on Aug. 3," Lake said. "It took us a bit over a month to complete. We had a soft opening on Friday the 16th. We are going to have a grand opening on Friday (Sept. 30) starting at 11 a.m. There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony and all yogurt will be 10 percent off.

"The company we work with, YoCream offers 50 different flavors," Lake added. "We're going to change one to two flavors a week. We'll keep basic flavors like chocolate and vanilla around, but we want to offer seasonal flavors. We're planning on soon offering pumpkin flavored yogurt for the fall later this week. So far our most popular flavor is cake batter, though my favorite is still vanilla with fresh fruit."

Tropical Moon is located at 907 4th Ave. It is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday. Cash and all major credit/debit cards are accepted. For more information, call 522-9866.
