Espresso Mojo offers local brews downtown

HUNTINGTON -- When Paula Vega opened her cupcake shop in downtown Huntington there was just one problem, if you wanted a little coffee with your dessert you would have to go elsewhere.

So the addition of the coffee shop only made sense. Espresso Mojo owner Chris Shoemaker saw the opportunity and moved his coffee shop from US 60 to Paula Vega's Cakes at 308 9th St., in downtown Huntington.

The new location had a grand opening in late July.

"I first started talking with Paula Vega almost two years ago when she opened at the Third and Ninth deli," Shoemaker said. "Last year when she opened her own shop here we started talking again. It just made sense. I'm a Huntington native, and this is a Huntington product; our coffee beans are roasted by a local company. The cupcakes are a local product. It's two local brands coming together in what I think is a perfect marriage of dessert and coffee."

Espresso Mojo has been in Huntington since 2004.

"Since our beans are roasted locally it's a pretty fresh cup of coffee," Shoemaker said. "Our coffee is a blend of three different types of beans from three different regions. It creates all the nutty, chocolatey undertones that are associated with our espresso. If you blend a coffee been that's more acidic with one that's less acidic with a third that's more earthy it creates a complex flavor."

The 9th Street location carries over all the signature items that are popular at the St. Mary's Medical Center location, including the Red Bull Smoothies. Another popular item is "Marco's Mocha" a white chocolate mocha with a caramel drizzle. The store sells an assortment of rolls, scones and other pastries.

"We bake our own cinnamon rolls and scones," Shoemaker said. "Paula actually makes for us an exclusive blueberry coffee cake. We can't give the recipe for it away. It's too good. She also sometimes makes banana nut bread for us and occasionally she makes zucchini bread and other seasonal items. We sell a lot of Red Bull Smoothies. It's a that afternoon pick-me-up that people want. As we move into the cooler seasons we're probably going to start selling more hot drinks in the evenings."

Shoemaker is hoping to add a local delivery service later this year. The store also offers catering options.
