Rio Grande locations offer convenience

Oct. 18, 2012 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- First established in Charleston in 1990, Rio Grande is one of the most well-known Mexican restaurants in West Virginia with 18 locations throughout the Mountain State and neighboring states.

The success of Rio Grande paved the way for many small mom and pop Mexican restaurants to follow. A second Rio Grande opened its doors in West Huntington before moving to the current location on 4th Avenue. A second Huntington location opened at 2596 5th Ave., in 2004. The 5th Avenue location is fairly unique within the chain as it is the only one with a drive-through window.

"There used to be a Big Loafer in this location," said Owner Genaro Aguirre. "It took us a few weeks to get ready."

Aguirre took a real hands-on role in the restaurant's design. There's even a mural of the Mexican Revolution's Emilliano Zapata on one of the walls.

Aguirre believes consistency is one of the reasons for the restaurant's continued success.

"I think all of the Rio Grande locations serve good food," he said. "Our Pollo Loco (grilled chicken) and Chori Pollo (chicken with chorizo sausage) are very popular. We are also planning on running some drink specials next week for 'Day of the Dead.'"

Rio Grande features a wide variety of traditional Mexican dishes such as fajitas, burritos and enchiladas. Specialties include the Chile Colorado (beef tips, red sauce, fried beans, rice, lettuce, tomatoes, tortillas and guacamole salad), Special Toro Loco (chicken enchiladas with green sauce and rice) and Cancun Especial (pork chops, rice, refried beans and flour tortillas).

The restaurant features a drink menu offering a variety of domestic beers as well as imported Mexican "cervezas" like Nega Modelo, Dos Equis and Carta Blanca. Customers can also order traditional, strawberry or peach margaritas. The menu also features traditional deserts like flan and Mexican fried ice cream.

Rio Grande is located at 2595 5th Ave. It is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday. Cash and all major credit/debit cards are accepted.
