GOOD EATS: Porfirio's signature dish offers Mexican variety
BARBOURSVILLE -- Porfirio's is a small, Mexican restaurant which, on a daily basis, serves up some of the best burritos, enchiladas and fajitas in the area.
Owner Porfirio Morlees first opened the restaurant and pub, located in the East Gate Shops off of U.S. 60 East near the Huntington Mall, in 1999. Morlees had plenty of experience working in the restaurant industry before deciding to open up his own business.
"I've been working for a long time in Mexican restaurants," he said. "I was working for someone else for 10 years before I decided to go into business for myself, and I made it."
Porfirio's signature item is the Especial De Porfirio's, a combination platter featuring a burrito, chile relleno (stuffed pepper), an enchilada, a beef taco, chalupa, rice and beans.
"The Especial de Porfirio's is very popular because it has a little bit of everything that you can try," he said. "It's almost enough food for two people."
Another popular dish is the chilaquiles: fried tortilla strips topped with a special sauce, chicken, cheese, sour cream and guacamole. Other Mexican favorites such as chimichangas, carne asada and tamales round out the menu. Most items come with fresh corn chips and salsa on the side.
The majority of dinner items range from $7 to $10. The restaurant also runs a full bar severing a variety of domestic beers and imported cervezas like Dos Equis, as well as margaritas. Dessert items include flan and sopapillas.
The menus come with a glossary of Mexican terms, helpful for customers unfamiliar with the cuisine.
"If you're not sure what you want, you can check the back of the menu or ask your server," Morlees said. "I have a lot of customers for who this is their first taste of authentic Mexican food. They come in and they like Porfirio's food forever."
In the coming weeks, some changes will be made to the restaurant. The menus are being expanded and redesigned.
"Pretty soon I'm going to be adding some more things to the menu, including some fish and broccoli-based dishes," Morlees said. "Pretty much everything already on the menu will stay, but I've been trying some new recipes in the kitchen. I've made them myself and asked some of my customers to try them, and the ones that people liked were added to the menu."
Porfirio's is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and on Saturdays. Friday the restaurant is open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday it is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Cash and all major credit cards are accepted, no checks. Lunch specials are available from 11 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.
