Snowshoe, W.Va. — Summer days are supposed to be long and lazy, but Snowshoe Mountain is introducing new opportunities to get guests moving in the great outdoors. The summer weather at Snowshoe is perfect for outdoor endeavors. Warm summer days rarely exceed 80 degrees on the thermometer. An elevation of 4848’ ensures that while the rest of the region suffers under oppressive humidity, Snowshoe is comfortable, with sunny days perfect for hiking, biking or any one of Snowshoe’s summer activities.
This season, the Adventure Program will introduce two new ways to have family fun on the mountain. The Off-Road Dune Buggy tours offer an adrenaline-fueled experienced for all ages. Beginning June 26, tours will be available seven days a week. The one-hour excursions will provide guests with a new way to experience the scenic wonders of the Snowshoe area. Tours will include a trip to the mountain’s breathtaking “airport” overlook, offering vistas of the Western Territory and valley below. The off-road buggies will also be the transportation of choice for Snowshoe’s Adventure Dining Program. Dinner tours will allow guest to experience Snowshoe’s amazing sunsets—picked by Southern Living Magazine as the region’s best—followed by a mouthwatering dinner at the picturesque Sunrise Backcountry Hut. The one-of-a-kind experience is an opportunity for an unforgettable evening. Adventure Dining Tours are also available for lunch.
Snowshoe is also debuting a geocache program this summer. Geocaching is a treasure hunt-like activity in which participants use a GPS (global positioning system) to find mapped destinations and “caches”, usually small trinkets or tokens. For first-time participants or those wanting to learn more about the sport, Snowshoe will offer an introductory seminar. The free sessions will focus on the evolution of the sport as well as tips and advice from experienced geocachers. Once on the mountain, guests will be treated to amazing hiking terrain and stunning views while testing their geocaching skills.
In addition to the geocaching seminars, Snowshoe will also offer an introductory course for those interested in learning more about downhill mountain biking. While Snowshoe boasts some of the East’s best downhill terrain for experienced riders, it is also a great place to get started in this exciting sport. Seminar participants will learn about the evolution of the sport, proper gear and safety equipment, as well as riding basics from expert instructors. Following the free seminars, guests are invited to “add-on” a beginner lesson, which will utilize Snowshoe’s newest downhill terrain, a groomed novice trail which winds down the basin side to Shavers Lake. This trail allows new riders to tackle some technical terrain while gaining confidence.
