Buckeye State to celebrate 40th anniversary of Ohio Scenic Rivers Program

September 29, 2008 @ 03:41 PM

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Director Sean Logan of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) will be the keynote speaker at the 40th Anniversary Celebration of the Ohio Scenic Rivers Program, on Thursday, October 2 in Loveland.

The celebration, co-sponsored by Little Miami Inc., will also feature remarks by Ernest Quintana, the National Park Service Midwestern Regional director and Loveland Mayor Robert Weisgerber. The public is invited to attend the 4:30 p.m. reception, which is being held at Nesbet Park.

Ohio led the nation in 1968 when it passed the first Scenic River Act of its kind. Designating rivers as wild, scenic or recreational helps protect and preserve the best of Ohio's high-quality streams. The first river to join the state system was the Little Miami State Scenic River, which became Ohio's first national scenic river in 1973.

There are 13 rivers designated in Ohio's scenic river system: Big & Little Darby, Chagrin, Conneaut Creek, Grand, Kokosing, Little Beaver, Little Miami, Maumee, Mohican, Olentangy, Sandusky, Stillwater and Upper Cuyahoga representing a total of 754 designated river miles.
