People from six states signed up for Winter Adventure Weekend

Dec. 29, 2011 @ 03:43 PM

OLIVE HILL, Ky. — More than 123 people from half a dozen states are already registered for the  third annual Winter Adventure Weekend at Carter Caves State Resort Park.

The event, which was the winner of The Outstanding Special Event Of The Year for 2011, will feature nearly 100 different trips that include hiking, canoeing, recreational tree climbing, cave tours, winter survival, rappelling and other adventures.

The weekend is set for Jan. 27-29.

There are many new trips at this year’s event, including a high-line ride, mountain biking, geocaching, campfire cooking, winter tree identification, woman-only backpacking trip and six new adventure presentations held on Saturday. There are also new locations for the recreational tree climbing program and the “down for dummies” rappelling program.

Guests will be able to select from a list of trips they want to take – for beginners and advanced winter adventurers alike. All of the trips and events are led by guides.

Each trip level is based on the difficulty and skills required. The higher the level, the more skills and special equipment are needed.. Guests will be responsible for appropriate dress, water, snacks and other items.

The list of the trips, along with registration information and other details for the 2012 event are available at www.winteradventureweekend.com.  All participants must register online at this site. The nonrefundable fee for adults (age 13 and older) is $25, and the nonrefundable fee for children ages 6-12 is $20. (All participants must be at least 6 years old. Some trips have additional age requirements.)

Participants will be able to submit photos in the Winter Photo Salon competition.  Categories include winter adventure, caving and local nature-adventure photos.  The accepted images will be shown during the Saturday night program, and winners will be awarded ribbons.

The 2011 Winter Adventure Weekend event won a best event award in its class this past November at the Kentucky Recreation and Parks Society Conference held in Bowling Green.
