West Virginia State Parks prepping for New Year's Eve

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – From 1920s jazz to country and swing, several of West Virginia’s state parks with lodges are offering a variety of dinners and dances and packaged options for New Year’s Eve. Lodge parks offering parties include Blackwater Falls, Cacapon Resort, Canaan Valley Resort, Chief Logan Lodge, North Bend, Pipestem Resort, Stonewall Resort, Twin Falls Resort, and Tygart Lake.

Cacapon Resort State Park – Contact: Mike Halterman, 304-258-1022

 “The Flashbacks” bring in the New Year at Cacapon with music, dancing, and a formal toast. The overnight package at Cacapon includes lodging for two, dinner, dance and live entertainment, midnight toast and breakfast buffet. The cost is $207.16 per couple. Dinner includes baked salmon, carved prime rib, steamed shrimp.  Dinner hours are 5 – 8 p.m.  Breakfast buffet on Jan. 1 is from 8 – 10:30 p.m. New Year’s Eve Celebration Dance/Midnight Toast Tickets (dance only) are $30.

 The Flashbacks are based out of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and play a wide variety of styles from masters like Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Smokey Robinson, Carl Perkins, Buck Owens, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Patsy Cline, etc. , and even a few great classic rock pieces from artists like The Rolling Stones, The Eagles, Queen, ELO and more. The Flashbacks offer music that appeals to a very wide age group from young to old. The music is very lively and very dance friendly.

Cacapon State Park, near Berkeley Springs in Morgan County, is a year-round vacation and travel destination. Situated less than two hours from Washington, D.C. and Baltimore Md., the rural and restful surroundings make Cacapon and nearby Berkeley Springs State Park a nice retreat for a day or for the weekend.

 Blackwater Falls State offers a two-night package that includes dinner, entertainment, and hors d’ovuvres. The party will be in the conference center. Cost for the package is $283.50 per couple.  Skiing at nearby Canaan Valley is an option for visitors making it a New Year’s weekend.  The sled run and touring center at Blackwater Falls also are open.

Blackwater Falls also offers a First Day Hike on Jan. 1 at 10 a.m.  Meet Park Naturalist Paulita Cousin for a first hike of 2012 in the lodge lobby.  Blackwater Falls is one of four state parks in West Virginia participating in this nationwide program challenge by America’s State Parks.

Blackwater Falls State Park is located in Davis in Tucker County. The park features a 54-unit lodge, vacation cabins, camping, full-service restaurant, and one the state’s most photographed scenes, Blackwater Falls.

The Jaguars dance band will provide music for the dance and celebration at Chief Logan Lodge.   The park features an overnight package at the 75-upscale-room lodge. Package includes dinner at either 5 or 7 p.m., dancing from 9 until midnight, two drink tickets, and overnight accommodation. 

The overnight package is $179 for king or queen hotel accommodation; dinner and party only is $112. For guests curious about the future, a psychic is part of the evening. This activity is not part of the packaged price.

Chief Logan Lodge is located one mile from US 119 between Chapmanville and Logan.  Open year-round, the facility features an indoor swimming pool, fitness center, restaurant, and impressive conference facilities.

Ring in the New Year with two party options at Canaan Valley Resort. The family party includes buffet dinner, family games and DJ entertainment from 8 p.m. until midnight, punch toast at midnight and party favors. Dinner is from 6 - 8 p.m. with salads, fresh fruit, fried chicken, BBQ ribs, beef pot roast and more.

The adult party includes buffet dining in the Hickory Room from 6 – 10 p.m., access to the lounge party featuring Brother Short, plus champagne toast and party favors. Dinner includes shrimp cocktail, crab bisque, crab stuffed fillet of sole, lobster ravioli and additional side and entrees. Action stations include hand-carved filet mignon, steamed crab, banana foster with vanilla bean ice cream and strawberry jubilee. The cost is $30 per person. Both party packages include tax and gratuities.

 North Bend State Park

New Year’s Eve is popular at North Bend, so popular that the park is booked.  “There may be some last minute cancelations,” said Ken Zebo, activities coordinator. North Bend has other January events such as Little Princess Ball scheduled on Jan. 7 for dads and daughters and Winter Wonder Weekend Jan. 20 - 22.

A night of activities, music and lots of fun are in store at Pipestem Resort State Park. Dinner in Bluestone Dining Room is from 5:30 to 9 p.m. and includes roasted pork loin, grilled chicken breast, prime rib, a variety of sides including roasted root vegetables, collard greens and more. Salads and desserts complete a full buffet menu. 

The dance and year-end celebration begins at 8 p.m. in the conference center and concludes at 1 a.m.  Dance music will be provided by DJ Sandi Elam. There is a midnight toast and party favors and a cash bar open for the duration of the celebration. The cost of the overnight package Dec. 31 at McKeever Lodge, plus dinner and dance, is $161.16 per couple.  The cost of dinner and dance only is $47.54 per person.

 An outstanding five-course meal with wine will be hosted at Lightburn’s,  the restaurant at the Palmer Course pro shop. After dinner, dance to live music by the Jenny and Nathan Wilson Trio.  Shuttle service will be provided. On Sunday afternoon, Jan. 1, guests can relax in front of a crackling fire or watch football games on HD TVs in TJ Muskies. The $399 package includes overnight accommodations at Stonewall Lodge, chocolate truffles and berries upon arrival, five-course dinner with wine at Lightburn’s, dancing and live music, breakfast for two delivered to the room.  Breakfast includes egg frittata for two, fresh pastries and fruit, coffee and orange juice. 

 New Year's Eve at the Lodge includes dinner prepared by the award-winning culinary team at Stillwaters Restaurant, with champagne.  Reservations are required. Then, listen to music by the Stalnakers and ring in the New Year in TJ Muskies lounge. A crackling fire in the Grand Hall with a glass of wine and live jazz playing in the background is also on the schedule. Additionally there is an indoor/outdoor heated pool, two Jacuzzis, and an outdoor fire pit at the lodge. There will be activities for the kids. A 1920s gangster themed party will take 2011 out this New Year’s Eve at Twin Falls Resort State Park. “We’re bringing in the new year with a bang” said activities coordinator Bryan Danforth. “Attire for the evening can be as you like, but we’re encouraging an appearance that compliments a 1920s setting.”  Danforth indicates that in addition to dancing, there will be a mock casino, food and the traditional midnight toast. “It is shaping up to be a great evening of entertainment.”

Two- and one-night packages are available that include dinner and dance on Saturday, Dec. 31, evening refreshments, champagne toast at midnight, a cash bar, and party favors. Music will be provided by DJ Will Shumate.  The party package and overnight night stay in the lodge is $205 per couple. A discounted room rate for consecutive nights is offered for individuals wanting to make a weekend trip. Cabin and other package prices are also available. Danford will also be leading a First Day Hike on Jan. 1 at 2 p.m.

 Twin Falls Resort State Park is located in Wyoming County near Mullens and Pineville.  A year-round destination, the park offers a 47-room lodge, vacation cabins, campgrounds, extensive hiking and biking trails, restaurant, and a championship golf course.  Two of many notable photographic settings at Twin Falls are the Pioneer Farm and the waterfalls.

Live music, dinner, dance, snacks, party favors, champagne toast, and door prizes are planned at Tygart Lake. The band is Streetwise from the Clarksburg area playing Southern and Classic Rock.  The overnight package cost is $249 per couple. The dinner choices are prime rib, roasted turkey or seafood prepared by the Boston Beanery.  Reservations are required.

 Tygart Lake State Park is near Grafton and features a 20-room lodge, cabins, full-service restaurant, lake and outdoor activities.
