Canaan Valley to celebrate West Virginia Day, June 19-21

 DAVIS, W.Va. — Canaan Valley Resort celebrates WV Days on June 19-21 to commemorate the day West Virginia became part of the United States on June 20, 1863. 

For the 13th year in a row, the resort will celebrate West Virginia’s birthday by remembering its past; witness an authentic Civil War encampment, battlefield surgery demonstration, mock battles and more.

 The Civil War encampment will open on June 19 and will be on display throughout the weekend to showcase the soldiers’ living conditions during the war. Guests will also be able to observe battle reenactments and wartime surgery demonstrations, including a leg amputation, on Saturday and Sunday presented by the Barbour Grays from Philippi, WV; 1st. West Virginia Calvary Company "C", the 140th Volunteers from Green County, PA, and the WV Light Artillery. West Virginian local artisans and crafters will display their art for sale on Saturday.

Professor, historian and author of "One of Lincoln's Best", Dr. Robert Anderson will be the guest speaker on Saturday afternoon to discuss the intimate interactions that led to the birth of West Virginia and to highlight the unsung heroes of the war. In the evening, Dr. Anderson will present the strange, mysterious & supernatural happenings of the Civil War focusing on Harpers Ferry and other haunted sites.

The West Virginia Irish Road Bowling Association www.wvirishroadbowling.com will be at the resort on Sunday to demonstrate the ancient game of Irish Road Bowling which has been played for more than 300 years on the rural country roads in Ireland. This game is quickly gaining popularity among all age groups throughout the country due to its easy to learn format and fun, yet competitive nature.
