Drawing held for special deer hunt at Lake Katharine Nature Preserve
A random drawing will be held Monday, September 29 to select participants for three special controlled deer hunts at Lake Katharine State Nature Preserve in Jackson County.
Lake Katharine State Nature Preserve encompasses more than 2,000 acres in southeast Ohio. The rich Appalachian forest is cut by deep ravines and the clear-water lake is surrounded by towering sandstone cliffs. High deer population numbers have begun to negatively impact the flora of the nature preserve. Reducing the deer herd is an effective tool used to help protect threatened plant communities.
There will be three one-day hunts held on Monday, November 10, Monday, November 17 and Monday, November 24. Applicants will be assigned a hunting date at the time of the drawing and will receive a permit which is good for two hunters. Applicants must hold a current Ohio hunting license to be eligible.
Applicants should submit a 3"x5"card with their printed name, complete address and daytime telephone number along with the caption "Lake Katharine Gun Hunt" and a check or money order for $5 processing fee (no cash accepted) to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Natural Areas and Preserves, 2045 Morse Road, Bldg. F-1, Columbus, OH 43229. Only one name per postcard. Entries must be received no later than September 27. Only successful applicants will be notified.
The preserve is located 2 miles west of Jackson on County Road 85 (Lake Katharine Road). To learn more, call the preserve office at (740) 286-2487.
