Swimming days running out as summer winds down

They start dropping off slowly, one by one, and soon, all the pools are closed and summer is gone like the wind.

Pools at A.D. Lewis Community Center and the YMCA's Glenbrier closed this weekend, but there are still a few pools and lakes holding out through Labor Day weekend, and even a water-spitting dragon that has no fear of fall.

Here's a look at the last, few lakes, pools and waterparks to swim.

Dreamland Pool

WHERE: U.S. Route 60 West and 23rd Street in Kenova.

LAST DAY: Monday, Sept. 1.

HOURS: Noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. The last week of operation (starting Monday, Aug. 25, the pool will be open 3 to 8 p.m. with special concession prices and other fun).

HOW MUCH: Gate admission $3.50 adults, $2 children 4 through 12. A discount card also will be available.

WHAT ELSE: Basketball, tennis courts, corn hole, concessions, a skate park with five obstacles and a new beach volleyball court.

April Dawn Park Sprayground

WHERE: Milton.

LAST DAY: Closed after the West Virginia Pumpkin Festival (after the first weekend of October).

HOURS: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

HOW MUCH: Free.

WHAT ELSE: The area's first sprayground is a water-breathing dragon complete with dancing fountains. Playground, picnic shelter, grills and restrooms.

Barboursville Pool

WHERE: Central Avenue and Kuhn Street in Barboursville.

LAST DAY: Friday, Aug. 24. But the pool will be open Labor Day weekend, Friday, Aug. 30 through Monday, Sept. 1.

HOURS: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

HOW MUCH: $4 per person.

Beech Fork State Park

Stowers Branch Swimming Area

WHAT ELSE: Deck to rent, new playground, free picnic tables and grills. Fishing, hiking trails nearby. Also, boat rentals just around the bend on Beech Fork Lake near the dam.

Waves Of Fun Wave Park

WHERE: No. 1 Valley Park Dr., Hurricane.

HOURS: The pool will try to maintain normal hours up through Sunday, Aug. 24. Closed until Labor Day weekend.

"The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" is a fictional story that offers a unique perspective on how prejudice, hatred and violence affect innocent people, particularly children, during wartime. Through the lens of an eight-year-old boy largely shielded from the reality of World War II, we witness a forbidden friendship that forms between Bruno, the son of Nazi commandant, and Shmuel, a Jewish boy held captive in a concentration camp. Though the two are separated physically by a barbed wire fence, their lives become inescapably intertwined. The imagined story of Bruno and Shmuel sheds light on the brutality, senselessness and devastating consequences of war from an unusual point of view. Together, their tragic journey helps recall the millions of innocent victims of the Holocaust.

And, when she tried to find her own way to be true to her heart and loyal to her duty, the resulting controversies and convoluted liaisons would leave all of London talking.

The Metropolitan Opera: La Damnation de Faust Encore

Fathom presents an encore presentation of Berlioz's "La Damnation de Faust" in HD on the Big Screen! The encore presentation (captured live on Saturday, Nov. 22) will be shown for one day only on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at 7 p.m. in all time zones. Robert Lepage, one of theater's most imaginative directors, applies his artistry to Berlioz's contemplation of good and evil. Using ethereal projections, Lepage has created a vision for "La Damnation de Faust" that seamlessly marries art and technology. Marcello Giordani stars in the title role opposite Susan Graham as Marguerite and John Relyea as Méphistophélès. James Levine conducts this rarely staged masterwork.

In Bragg they find an unusually wily adversary who raises the stakes by playing with emotions. It is now up to Cole and Hitch to stand against the actions of the renegade rancher, which have already taken their toll on the town.

And by the end of the day, she is beginning to wonder if their crazy families' choices are not so crazy after all.

Using his associates in the organization, and manipulating his powerful contacts within the CIA and the British government, Greene promises to overthrow the existing regime in a Latin American country, giving the General control of the country in exchange for a seemingly barren piece of land. As Bond gets closer to finding the man responsible for betraying Vesper, he must keep one step ahead of the CIA, the terrorists and even M, to unravel Greene's sinister plan and stop his organization.

Danny and Wheeler trash a company truck on an energy drink-fueled bender. Upon their arrest, the court gives them a choice: do hard time or spend 150 service hours with a mentorship program. After one day with the kids, however, jail doesn't look half bad. Surrounded by annoying do-gooders, Danny struggles with his every neurotic impulse to guide Augie through the trials of becoming a man. Unfortunately, the guy just dumped by his girlfriend has only sarcasm to offer a bashful 16-year-old obsessed with medieval role play. Meanwhile, charming Wheeler tries to trade in an addiction to partying and women to assist a fifth-grader named Ronnie redirect his foul-mouthed ways. It would probably help if Ronnie's new mentor wasn't an overgrown adolescent whose idea of quality time includes keggers in Venice Beach. Once the center's ex-con director gives them an ultimatum, Danny and Wheeler are forced to tailor their brand of immature wisdom to their charges. And if they can just make it through probation without getting thrown in jail, the world's worst role models will prove that, sometimes, it takes a village idiot to raise a child.

Along the way, with the help of Inspector Tarconi, Frank has to contend with the people who strong armed him to take the job, agents sent by Vasilev to intercept him, and the general non-cooperation of his passenger. Despite Valentina's cynical disposition and his resistance to get involved, Frank and Valentina fall for each other, while escaping from one life-threatening situation after another.
