There are certain historic figures from childhood that resonate across generations and have a broad appeal; pirates, Native Americans, and Vikings were part of mine. Of these three, Vikings remained the most mysterious. Strange, hairy men from Scandinavia, sweeping all before them in sagas of plunder, rape, and pillage as they sailed across the North Sea and English Channel bringing their own version of mayhem wherever they went. One would think that this is hardly a culture worth exploring.</p>
