West Virginia Music Hall of Fame class announced this morning
CHARLESTON — The second class of inductees of the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame were announced this morning at a press conference in the Great Hall of the Cultural Center in the Capitol Complex.
Joining Hall of Fame founder Michael Lipton for the announcement was HoF board chair Rod Watkins (vice president, ZMM Architects & Engineers), and board members Andy Ridenour (executive producer, "Mountain Stage"), Josh Barrett (member DiTrapano, Barrett & DiPiero PLLC), and John Lilly (editor, "Goldenseal Magazine").
The musicians to be inducted in the "living" category are: Wilma Lee and Stoney Cooper, Phyllis Curtin, Robert Drasnin, The Lilly Brothers and Don Stover, and Charlie McCoy.
In the "deceased" category, Ann Baker, Maceo Pinkard, Red Sovine and Frankie Yankovic were selected.
The musicians will be formally inducted in a ceremony on November 6 at the Cultural Center Theater in Charleston.
A virtual "Hall of Fame," including photos, bios and sound clips, will be available at the HoF web site (www.wvmusichalloffame.com).
Randall Reid-Smith, Commissioner of the West Virginia Division of Culture and History, was in attendance as well as Dennis Adkins, executive director of West Virginia Public Broadcasting, whoannounced that WV Public Television will again air the ceremony live throughout the state.
"I am pleased that West Virginia PBS will be able to present this live broadcast for a second year," said Adkins. "Music is an integral part of much of our state's culture and history. Through our partnership with the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame we will be helping to ensure that future generations will always be able to enjoy and appreciate the contributions of these musicians, singers and songwriters."
John Lilly, whose "Goldenseal Magazine" celebrates all manner of West Virginia culture agreed. "West Virginia has always been home to some of the world's finest musicians and musical innovators, in a wide range of styles," he said. "It's high time we got together to recognize our state's musical treasures, both as an appropriate gesture to them and their artistry, and to inspire ourselves to continue their achievements."
