Other hot spots for local gifts
The Big Sandy Superstore Arena is the hot spot for local gifts this weekend as the Lions Club Tri-State Arts and Crafts Show sets up shop.
Here are a few other places to check out for a treasure trove of local gifts.
The Downtown Depot: Located at the corner of 9th Street and 4th Avenue, this shop run by Goodwill is like a mini Tamarack with the best of West Virginia hand crafts, food, books, music, glass and more.
Old Central City: Located at 14th Street West in Huntington, Old Central City is one of West Virgnia's largest antique districts and is packed with shops such as Hattie and Nan's, Grandmother's Attic, Horsin' Around and Central City Cafe (featured recently on "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives"). First Friday Art Walk: Ashland's monthly gallery hop along Winchester Avenue, First Friday takes place from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday in the many galleries along this hopping Arts Corridor. Hot spots are The Upstairs Gallery, where Barb Delligatti hosts artwork of every ilk from about 40 artists; to Pendleton Art Center, home to the workshops of about 40 artists and the Left Bank Cafe. Also open during First Friday is the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center. Hospice Gift Shop: From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Liz Ryder, glassmaker with Ryder's Relics, will be demonstrating her glass beadwork, called lampwork at the gift shop at 1101 6th Ave., Huntington.
Jesse Stuart Foundation: Located at 1645 Winchester Ave., in Ashland, Jesse Stuart Foundation has the area's largest collection of Appalachian books from such authors as Silas House, James Still, Wendell Berry and hundreds of other authors. Scent From Heaven: Located above Java Joint, on 3rd Avenue and Hal Greer Boulevard, Scent From Heaven carries a wide range of locally made products from clothes, handbags and beaded necklaces to art, books and music.
