Angela Henderson-Bentley: Do you have your own top TV wedding moments?

July 29, 2010 @ 12:00 AM

There's no doubt about it. Summer is a time for weddings. You've possibly been to one or two yourself this season. So what better time to stroll down memory lane and relive some of my favorite TV wedding moments.

Since "Friends" is my all-time favorite show, you'd think my mind would go right to one of the five weddings that show had. But for some reason, I don't. Maybe it's because my favorite "Friends" wedding was actually the one we didn't see -- when Ross and Rachel (David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston) got married in Las Vegas. The moment when Chandler and Monica (Matthew Perry and Courteney Cox) see them burst through the door of the chapel is an absolute classic and in my opinion, one of the biggest surprises in TV history.

I would also rank the wedding of Whitley and Byron from "A Different World" pretty high, even though Whitley (Jasmine Guy) didn't go through with the marriage. In one of TV's most romantic moments ever, Dwayne (Kadeem Hardison) showed up just in time to stop the wedding and carry Whitley away.

And if you want to talk about carrying the bride away, has there ever been a more classic daytime moment than when Bo (Peter Reckell) drove in on his motorcycle to the strains of "Holding Out for a Hero" to stop Hope (Kristian Alfonso) from marrying Larry Welch (Andrew Massett) on "Days of Our Lives"? Or what about the look on Larry's face when he pulled back his bride's veil to see Bo's friend, Howie Hofstedder (Stanley Brock)?

If I were to pick a more recent wedding, I would go with Robert and Amy's (Brad Garrett and Monica Horan) from "Everybody Loves Raymond" -- not so much for the wedding, but for the reception when Ray (Ray Romano) gives the classic "editing" speech that saves the day after Marie (Doris Roberts) ruins the wedding. For you trivia buffs, the dance that Robert and Amy did at their reception to Elvis Presley's "A Little Less Conversation," was modeled after the dance that Horan did at her own wedding to Phil Rosenthal, the show's creator.

But the wedding I always think of first when I think of TV weddings is when Jesse married Rebecca on "Full House." There's just something about seeing Jesse (John Stamos) and a gospel choir serenade Rebecca (Lori Loughlin) with The Beach Boys' "Forever" that makes me all gushy inside -- and that doesn't usually happen to me.

However, my all-time favorite wedding would have to be the one where the bride and groom nearly ran out of gas getting to the chapel and then had their first fight as a married couple because the bride insisted on immediately updating her status on Facebook. Don't remember that one? That's because even though it sounds like a wedding right out of a sitcom, it was actually my wedding last week. It wasn't a TV wedding, but it was beautiful nonetheless. I didn't get serenaded, but no one interrupted it and we both said the right names. So I would definitely rank it pretty high.

Now watching someone throw up in a restaurant on the first night of our honeymoon? Not so high. But that's a different story for another time.
