Bowersock art exhibit opens Friday at Java Joint

October 01, 2008 @ 04:41 PM

 HUNTINGTON — Baltimore native painter Bruce Bowersock will be the exhibiting artist for the month of October at the Java Joint, 1555 3rd Ave.

A reception is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Java Joint, located across 16th Street from Marshall University.

Bowersock, who now lives in Ona, studied art at the Maryland Institute and the Schuler School of Fine Art, and Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida.

He has studied with some of the most established watercolor artists in the US, such as Robert Wood, Don Andrews, Joe Mayer, Ann Schuler, and Frederick Schuler Briggs.

 Bowersock, who has taught several semesters at Marshall University, and who is a regular art teacher at the Huntington Museum of Art, and at The Renaissance Gallery, is excited about showing his work at the coffee house and restaurant.

“It’s sort of like a mini retrospective in a sense with a few pieces that are obviously current,” Bowersock said of the about 16-piece exhibition. “There’s some black and white line drawings and some paintings so there is a variety which will be interesting.”

Bowersock has received juried status in many galleries and groups including: West Virginia Watercolor Society, Allied Artists of West Virginia, Tri State Arts Association, Huntington, WV; Beckley Art Group, Beckley, WV; Huntington Museum of Art, Huntington, WV; Baltimore Watercolor Society, Signature Member; Ashland Area Art Gallery, The Upstairs Gallery, also in Ashland;

He is a founding Member of The Renaissance Gallery in Huntington, The Fells Point Art Gallery and the Pearl Gallery in Baltimore and is an associate member of the American Society of Aviation Artists.

It’s a busy month for Bowersock, who just started a number of fall art classes at the Renaissance Gallery, including a Stretch and Sketch Saturday class that walks through the downtown of Huntington, looking for inspiration in the architecture and ambiance.

Bowersock is also teaching a new weekend workshop at Tamarack: The Best of West Virginia in Beckley Saturday through Monday, Oct. 25-27.
That watercolor workshop is called “Bold and Free.”
