Max & Erma's a fave place for burgers

September 01, 2010 @ 06:15 PM

HUNTINGTON -- First established in 1972 in Columbus, Ohio, Max & Erma's is an American family restaurant not unlike TGI Fridays or Applebee's. The Huntington location at Pullman Square will celebrate its fifth anniversary at Pullman Square this fall.

The restaurant's location by the movie theater serves it well. Not many restaurants are on the second floor, but it fits right in with the movie theater and the parking building," says general manager John Brooks.

Fairly unique among restaurants in the area is that the restaurant features an outdoor balcony dining section which it shares with its "sister" restaurant Frankie D's Italian Chophouse.

The restaurant is perhaps most famous for its hamburgers which are available in both 6- and 10-ounce sizes. Customers can enjoy a cheeseburger topped with American, medium sharp cheddar, crumbled bleu, pepper jack, mozzarella or Swiss cheese ($7.99 for a small "Erma" size, $8.99 for a 10 oz original). There are also a variety of specialty burgers such as the Backyard BBQ Bacon Cheddar and the Sautéed Mushroom and Swiss ranging in price from $8.29 to $9.29. The biggest and baddest burger is the "Garbage Burger" topped with bacon, cheddar, Swiss, American, mozzarella, grilled onions, sauteed mushrooms, guacamole and marinara sauce ($8.99 to $9.99).

"I hate to say it but we're primarily a hamburger joint. We do have some steaks, we do have some pastas, and we have some seafood. But we sell a lot of hamburgers and that's what we do well," Brooks said. "None of our meats or chicken comes in frozen. They're made specially for us and it's something we get that no one else has. We bake our cookies in the back, and we make our ranch and bleu cheese dressings fresh."

Other favorite items at Max and Erma's include the Tortilla Soup ($3.99 for a cup and $4.99 for a bowl) topped with cheddar, Monterey Jack and freshly made tortilla strips. Another mainstay is the Laredo Steak ($15.99), a sliced choice sirloin steak that is cooked to order and sliced for the customer. It's served with a baked potato and a house garden salad. Another popular item is the barbecue ribs served with onion rings and cole slaw ($14.99 for a half slab, $19.99 for a whole slab). The chain is famous for having a sundae bar located in the restaurant converted from an old bathtub (a homage to the original location in Columbus). An all-you-can-eat trip is only $2.99 for adults and 99 cents for children. The restaurant's famous cookies are available for $5.99 for a half dozen. Customers can choose between chocolate chip and white chocolate macadamia nut.

Max and Erma's is located at 26 Pullman Square to the left of the movie theater. It is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
