Diamond Teeth Mary blues tribute set for Sunday night at V Club
One of West Virginia’s most renowned blues singers, the late, great Diamond Teeth Mary Smith McClain, will be honored Sunday with a live music celebration at The V Club in downtown Huntington.
The V-Club, corner of Eighth Street and Sixth Avenue, and The West Virginia Blues Society, are teaming up to honor the late, great singer who toured with such blues legends as Bessie Smith (her half sister), Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, Nat King Cole, Count Basie and Duke Ellington.
She came out of retirement in Florida in the 1980s to play the White House, tour Europe and sing the blues until she passed away in 2000 at age 98.
The Sunday concert, which starts at 4 p.m., will feature the blues duo, Liz Pennock & Dr. Blues, from St. Petersburg, Florida, who toured with Mary before she died.
Also appearing will be C&S Railroad, local blues favorites.
Gov. Joe Manchin and Huntington Mayor Felington have both issued proclamations naming Sunday, August 31, 2008 “Diamond Teeth Mary McClain Day” in Huntington, and all of West Virginia.
Doors at The V-Club will open at 4 p.m., with music starting at 5 p.m. with C&S Railroad, and the proclamation presentation at 6 p.m.
There will be complimentary BBQ on the patio, and music will continue as late as people and time permit. Tickets are $10 and available at www.etix.com.
