Angie Fletcher Band headlines Dawg Dazzle
HUNTINGTON -- Angie Fletcher is figuring she might as well pitch a tent downtown because she's here for the party.
Fletcher, who fronts the rocking blues band that bears her name is headlining the free Celebrate Huntington Concert tonight at 6 p.m. in front of the Keith-Albee Performing Arts Center, 925 4th Ave.
Saturday, Fletcher will be playing with The Dawg's Jamboree Band, and the Angie Fletcher Band, which will be joined by guitarist Bud Carroll for the fifth annual Dawg Dazzle at Harris Riverfront Park.
For Fletcher, it's just all part of the fun and chaos of being on the Kindred Communications team, which is putting on the Celebrate Huntington concert, the Dawg Dazzle, and is also helping out with the Buddy's Barbecue Bike Night tonight, as well as the Heiner's Summer Concert Series at Pullman Square.
Tonight's Celebrate Huntington concert, which also features a showing inside the Keith of the Warner Brothers' film "We Are Marshall" on the big screen, is the official welcome party for the 2009 US Youth Soccer Region I Champsionships. Concessions will be available and proceeds benefit the Keith.
"I think it's incredible so we're glad to do it," Fletcher said of the soccer tournament, and the wealth of shows they're doing this weekend. "We have so many visitors coming into the area at just a great time of year because there literally is something to do everywhere. I'm proud to be part of radio stations that are so involved with the community. That's one thing Mike Kirtner (Kindred president) really stresses, and I'm proud to be part of the team."
This week, the Kindred team was dashing back and forth with the fervor of a NASCAR pit crew in the Kindred office as Fletcher was fielding dozens of calls and walk-in visitors getting tickets for Dawg Dazzle, which is free but requires a ticket that can he picked up all area McDonald's, MacReedo's, Benny's Cheesesteaks, Johnny's Fresh Meats and about a dozen other locations.
Out of town visitors have tickets for the event included in their greeting packets. In town visitors can pick up tickets at participating sponsors listed at www.WDGG.FM.
Tonight's free concert does not require a ticket. Tonight's show will also include a car show organized by Tom Hayner and BB's Car Club, as well as lots of street vendors set up along 4th Avenue.
M&M Inflatables will be set up tonight and Saturday on the river.
While the fireworks may be the main attraction on Saturday night, The Dawg's station manager, Jeff "Crawdog" Crawford has got a full day's worth of entertainment packed into an evening.
Crawford, who will start broadcasting live from the riverfront park at about 4 p.m., said it's already turned into a great tradition for the station.
"When we started it five years ago, Huntington had no fireworks to call its own," Crawford said. "When people called in, we had to send them to Barboursville or Ashland or elsewhere to see a show. Now, we can invite everyone back to the beautiful riverfront once again."
Gates open at 6 p.m., and there will be a slew of vendors including Buddy's Barbecue, Skagg's Kettle Corn, Sam's Hotdogs, CiCi's Pizza and Woodmen of the World cooking burgers.
In between the music, they'll be a couple big giveaways including two passes to the Richard Petty Driving Experience, as well as a new riding lawn tractor from Carmichael Equipment as part of the sexy tractor contest through The Dawg.
Angie Fletcher Band, which features two former members of Billy Ray Cyrus' band Slydog, hits the stage at 6:30 p.m. with Carroll.
"I wanted to make it a little more country and put a different flair on it," Fletcher said. "Bud's really the only person I considered. He's just so incredibly talented."
After giving away the Petty tickets, the Jamboree will hit the stage at 7:30 p.m. with a constant flow of some of the region's best country voices including: Bridget Reynolds, Larry Pancake, Stephen Salyers, Aaron Holley, Kelly Ray Davis, Robin lee, Angie Caserta, John Darrin Rowsey, Shawn Cabell, and 12-year-old singer Emily Kinner making her debut with the Jamboree.
The Jamboree will be broadcast live on the air at 93.7-FM until 10 p.m.
Fletcher said they're excited to be able to do the fireworks.
"These are hard times and sometimes it seems like there's no relief," Fletcher said. "If you can take just a few hours come down and enjoy some great entertainment to take you away from all that's been going on. People deserve to have that right now."
