Cinema goers get blast from the past with Flashback Mondays
HUNTINGTON -- There's going to be a tornado in downtown Huntington.
Move over meteorologists because we can even pinpoint the precise hour and day -- at 4 and 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30.
Cinema Theatre, 1021 4th Ave., is kicking off a new, classic movie series called Flashback Mondays by blowing the dust off of 10 great American films. First up is the classic "The Wizard of Oz," the 101-minute, G-rated film that is celebrating its 70th anniversary.
Admission will be $5 for the series, which will continue at 4 and 7 p.m. every Monday through Feb. 1.
Derek Hyman, president of the Greater Huntington Theatre Corp., said it is a great idea birthed by Vice President Greg Pauley and Advertising Director Marilyn Allen.
"We've noticed some other theaters doing it in smaller cities and in second-run houses," Hyman said. "First-run theaters have so much product coming in they don't have the time for some of these older films."
The film schedule so far for Flashback Mondays is: Monday, Dec. 7, "Dirty Dancing" (PG-13, 100 minutes); Monday, Dec. 14, "Casablanca," (PG, 102 minutes); Monday, Dec. 28, "The Polar Express," (G, 100 minutes); Monday, Jan. 4, "The Goonies," (PG, 114 minutes); Monday, Jan. 11, "Star Trek: The Motion Picture " (PG, 132-minutes); Monday, Jan. 18, "Ghostbusters" (PG, 107 minutes); Monday, Jan. 25, "Monty Python: Life of Brian," (94 minutes) and Monday, Feb. 1, "Animal House" (R, 109 minutes).
Hyman said Pauley and Allen tried to reel in movies from throughout the decades from classic black and white cinemas to some of the cult favorites like "Monty Python," "Ghostbusters" and "Animal House" that are perennial favorites in college towns.
The films will be shown on high-def Blu-Ray discs with a digital projector since it was too hard to obtain actual film copies of these classics.
If all goes well Hyman said the Cinema, which had a several year run of showing "Rocky Horror Picture Show" every Friday, hopes to continue the Flashback Mondays for a while.
"We're hoping it does well and that we can keep on doing it," Hyman said. "Maybe we'll also get some feedback on what people would like to see so we can show some different movies."
