GOOD EATS: Pruett has success with more than just football
HUNTINGTON -- Most people in the Tri-State are familiar with the success that former Marshall football coach Bobby Pruett had with the Thundering Herd, but some may not realize that he has a successful restaurant as well.
Located in the Pullman Plaza Hotel on 3rd Avenue, Coach Bobby Pruett's Steakhouse first opened its doors in 1999 and continues to offer top-quality steaks to the Huntington area.
"We used to have a Damon's in this location. It did well, but the Pullman Plaza wanted something a little more formal to go with it's image," said Mike Shockey, manager of the restaurant. "After Damon's went out, it was The Glass Grill for about a year before Pruett took over. This was during some of Pruett's best years."
The walls of the steakhouse are decorated with numerous coach's trophies from that era, as well as player's jerseys, and carvings of Marco, the school's mascot.
"We consider this to be an upscale steakhouse with a business-casual atmosphere," Shockey said. "We try to get in top-of-the-line steaks with certified angus beef."
Cuts of beef range from the $36.95 14-oz. Championship Porterhouse to $18.95 Linebacker's London Broil. All steaks are served with a house salad and a choice of rice, baked potato or fries. Customers looking for a more economical meal are welcome to try the Thunder Burger for $9.95. The restaurant also serves chicken, pork chops, salmon and a variety of pasta dishes.
One relatively new addition to the menu is a beef and chicken stir fry in a red curry sauce. Each day, a different steak special and a seafood special is offered. One meat that customers won't find at the restaurant is buffalo.
"I know of some people who love Marco but would probably have a hard time if we put that on our menu," Shockey said, laughing.
As one might expect, the restaurant sees a boost in business during game day weekends, though last year during the Friends of Coal Bowl, the steakhouse did have some unexpected admirers.
"To be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect, but the WVU fans were great actually," Shockey said. "That was one of the better weekends that we had. Everyone had a good time."
In addition to the steak menu, Bobby Pruett's Steakhouse keeps a fully stocked bar called "The Thunderzone," offering customers a variety of cocktails, martinis and mixed drinks to chose from. There is also an expansive wine list, as well as a variety of lagers and ales to chose from. During summer months, an outdoor cabana-style bar is open next to the Pullman Plaza hotel's pool serving tropical drinks.
The restaurant works closely with the hotel. Hotel guests can have meals from the steakhouse delivered to their room. The restaurant also shares a Patio Room with the hotel, which can be booked for banquets and private parties.
Bobby Pruett's Steakhouse is open from 5 to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The bar opens at 4 p.m. The restaurant is closed on Sundays. Cash, check and all major credit cards are accepted.
