Chicago jam-band Cornmeal at V Club Sunday
HUNTINGTON — Founded in Chicago over a decade ago, Cornmeal blends an eclectic mix of bluegrass, progressive rock, and jam band road ethics.
Fresh off their first live release, Live in Chicago, IL Vol. I, the group continues to wow audiences with their impressive songwriting and technical, improv-heavy live shows. While the bands studio albums (2001’s In The Kitchen, 2003’s Tales From Magic Stone Mountain, and 2006’s Feet First) undoubtedly showcase the group’s songwriting chops, Live in Chicago highlights their proficiencies in a raw live setting, equally balancing technicality with the know-how to keep improvisation focused and fresh.
The five piece group features traditional bluegrass instrumentation (fiddle, banjo, guitar, and string bass) with a drummer to provide addition rock flavor. With backgrounds and training ranging from formal, classical music to the most rootsy of bluegrass, the group has been inspired everything from classic rock, newgrass, and the Grateful Dead.
Cornmeal is here live at the V Club on Sunday, Sept. 12.
Local jam-band Fletcher’s Grove (a groove house divided with two WVU students and two Marshall students) opens the show, no matter who wins the game Friday. Tickets are $8 advance or $10 day of the show.

As a band that is no stranger to the road, Cornmeal plays upwards of 160 shows a year. They have been featured at major festivals such as Bonnaroo, All Good, High Sierra, 10,000 Lakes, Wakarusa, Del Fest, and many more.
Falling somewhere between the long-standing traditions of folk and bluegrass and the eclectic mix of the jam scene, Cornmeal has had the honor of sharing the stage and collaborating with various nationally recognizable acts such as John Hartford, the David Grisman Quartet, Del McCoury, Yonder Mountain String Band, moe., and Umphrey’s McGee.
