More history alive

November 05, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

Here are a couple other great places to learn more about local history this weekend:

Lincoln Exhibit: Get a new understanding of President Abraham Lincoln, the self-made frontier man, the great statesman and emancipator in a new Kentucky Historical Society exhibit called, "Beyond The Log Cabin: Kentucky's Abraham Lincoln," a new exhibit at the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center, 1620 Winchester Ave., Ashland.

The new exhibit, which features personal Lincoln items, art, political memorabilia and more from half a dozen museums including the Smithsonian, will be up through Feb. 19, 2010. This is the third and last stop for the Historical Society's exhibit, which was shown in Frankfort and Louisville. Go online at www.highlandsmuseum.com for more info, or call 606-329-8888.

Pioneer History: Museum in the Park at Chief Logan State Park will sponsor a Frontier Days Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 7-8. Activities will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday. The event is free, and the public is invited to attend. Local and regional reenactors will create an encampment on the Museum's grounds and demonstrate different techniques used by settlers to survive and be comfortable in early America. Visitors can learn about candle dipping, needle crafts, calligraphy, origami, basket weaving, blacksmithing and gunsmithing, leather working, horn and woodcarving, flint knapping and making tools, spinning and weaving, and various techniques for gathering, preparing and storing food. For more information about Frontier Days Weekend, contact Elizabeth Williams, site manager at the Museum in the Park, at 304-792-7229.

18th Century Rifle Frolic: At Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 7-8. An 18th Century style shooting matches with prizes awarded. 18th Century attire required for all participants and vendors. No attire requirements for spectators or park visitors. Those interested in participating call Steve White (606-564-4887) or Bud Diehl (501-744-5661). For general public information call Paul Tierney at Blue Licks at 859-289-5507.
