Starlight Cinema returns for summer finale
For a summer that seemed to flash by on hyperspeed, here's just the appropriately-paced movie to send it out of here.
"Speed Racer" is slotted up and ready to hit the track as one of the two movies that will be shown this weekend for a second round of Starlight Cinema at Harris Riverfront Park.
Starlight Cinema, the free, family-friendly, alcohol-free outdoor movie weekend, will show the PG-rated "Speed Racer" on Friday and on Saturday, the PG-13-rated Vegas card-sharking thriller "21."
Starlight features movies that are shown on a custom-designed, 20-by-40-foot screen hung on the riverfront floating stage and using 35-mm projection.
Like a drive-in movie without the cars, at Starlight, folks park the car and walk over to the riverfront amphitheater where they can set out blankets or lawn chairs.
Moviegoers are not permitted to bring in any food, drinks or coolers. Full concessions are available.
Gates will open at 7:30 p.m., and movies will start at dusk (about 9 p.m. or shortly thereafter).
There will be free M&M Inflatables both nights until the movie starts.
Admission is free with an advance ticket available at the following locations: Big Sandy Superstore Arena, Heiner's Surplus Store at Washington Ave. and 13th Street West, The Herald-Dispatch and five locations of Big Sandy Superstores; Teays Valley, Ashland, Chesapeake, Kenova and Ashland Outlet Stores.
Tickets are readily available, but moviegoers do need to pick up a ticket in order to enter the movie Friday or Saturday night.
Amanda Weiss, marketing manager for the arena, said the first Starlight Cinema in July drew more than 1,100 people for the Friday night movie and about 800 for the Saturday night show.
Resurrected after a seven-year absence, Starlight's first summer run had a bit of technical difficulties that have since been ironed out.
A problem with an audio component on the 35-mm camera caused the arena staff to scrap the movies that were originally to be shown in July ("Speed Racer," and "21") and replace them with two DVD movies, "The Bee Movie," and "Vantage Point."
Cheryl Myers, director of sales for the arena, said they decided to go ahead and show those movies now since they had been originally scheduled earlier this summer.
"'Speed Racer' is not going to come out on DVD until September, and '21' is a college-themed movie, so since all the students are moved back in we thought it's a great way to give them a reason for checking out the park and to enjoy Starlight Cinema as summer is coming to a close," Myers said.
Coming off record crowds at the recent Ribfest and the last weekend of the Picnic With the Pops, Myers said the Riverfront Park has been a real showcase this summer as recent volunteer planting efforts are in full bloom at the riverside park.
Myers said the arena staff has been working hard with the city in keeping the park ready for the upcoming events including Starlight and the Sept. 6, day-long 12th annual X-Fest.
"There's been a lot of people who have been reintroduced to the park this summer," Myers said. "It's now up to us to be creative in finding new ways to utilize the park. I know we've never been more proud of the park. There has been a lot of time and talent from volunteers and the city that has went into making the park look pretty."
Myers, who helped organize Starlight when she first worked for the arena in the mid-1990s, said by next year, they'll have a full schedule with about six movie weekends. They hope to restore Starlight to its heyday when as many as 3,000 people attended.
More shows are being booked at the park during Summer 2009 as the arena itself will be closed for about 120 days starting in mid-June for a scheduled seat installation.
"We couldn't be any happier with the way events have turned out," Myers said. "Our motivation now is to see how we can best utilize the park as we look for more ways to get outside the arena."
