Irish pub adds international feel to nightlife
HUNTINGTON -- Tired of going to the same places every night? Head out to Shamrock's Pub, a new, Irish-themed bar opening this Saturday, Aug. 23, in the former Marley's Doghouse building located at 2050 3rd Ave.
The pub is located directly across the street from Marshall University's Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
Shane, Sara and Ian Thorton wanted to create a bar with a friendly atmosphere where you can go and have a good time, listen to live music, play darts or pool and enjoy a long list of domestic and Irish drinks. Gone are the red-item covered walls of Marley's and in comes the new, green Irish theme.
The place features Irish flags and green walls. There are two areas to the club. The front features bar seating as well as tables and chairs and a big screen TV. Bands will perform every weekend on a stage in the back of the bar.
Ashley Corley, bartender and helper at the bar, said the folks at Shamrock's Pub are focused on helping local bands.
"This is a musician's bar," she said. "You can play as loud as you want and whatever type of music you want."
While the bar isn't just for the Irish, it is a celebration of the Irish heritage.
"We wanted to create a place where people who truly appreciate the Irish heritage can go and feel comfortable," she said.
The bar will be open every day of the week. Monday through Saturday the hours are 8 p.m. to around 3 a.m., while Sunday the bar opens at 1 p.m. On Marshall game days, the bar will open earlier for tailgating. Game days will also feature cookouts with food and drinks for sale.
Each day will bring special events: Mondays will feature football and $10 domestic buckets; Tuesdays have open mic and quarter pitchers; Wednesdays have $1 well drinks and domestic mugs; Thursdays have $3 domestic pitchers and $10 domestic buckets and Fridays and Saturdays will feature live music. Sunday is NFL Game Day featuring $3 domestic pitchers and $5 import pitchers. The bar is also allowed to sell drinks to be taken home.
Upcoming events include the Grand Opening party with special guest The Greens, a rock/jam band out of Morgantown, W.Va., on Saturday, Aug. 23. The Redbloods will perform Aug. 30, and Pistol Shot Gypsy is scheduled for Oct. 11. More shows will be announced soon.
The Bar Olympics will begin Sept. 11. Participants must register to compete, but this special event will continue for six weeks and feature teams of two competing against each other in beer pong, cornhole and other games. A cash prize will be rewarded.
For three weeks, three bands will perform during the Battle of the Bands, which begins Oct. 1. The best band will move on to the finals, and the winning band will receive a $200 cash prize and a place on stage on a Saturday night opening up for a bigger band or headlining their own show.
