Watery festivals celebrate region's byways this Labor Day weekend
If you're looking for a good time this weekend, you best head to the riverbank and find a shade tree.
From Charleston and Portsmouth to Point Pleasant, Catlettsburg and Huntington, river-themed celebrations are set along the banks of the Kanawha and Ohio Rivers, respectfully.
Here's a closer look at the river-themed festivals that are set to roll in with everything from hot air balloons and sternwheeler races to lots of national act bands to celebrate the three-day Labor Day weekend.
We are ... No. 1
Who's the Number One inland river port?
Say it, spray it ... Port of Huntington.
OK, enough bragging, it's time to head down to the annual National Maritime Days Celebration that runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday, Aug. 29-31, at Harris Riverfront Park.
Step right up and get tours of a Marathon towboat as well as cutters from the U.S. Coast Guard, stationed at Port of Huntington.
Also available are riverman displays and contests, information on river employment, displays by river businesses, groups and agencies and educational and promotional materials.
Admission is free.
A tribute to the river
Point Pleasant, W.Va., is right on the banks of the Kanawha and the Ohio Rivers and this weekend the little city celebrates with its second annual Tribute to the River that runs Friday and Saturday, Aug. 29-30.
The big draw is that the Point Pleasant River Museum is expecting not one, not 12 but 21 sternwheel boats at the riverfront for this event that will also include whistle blows, contests, entertainment and food.
The new AEP towboat, M/V MARINER, will be available for tours all day.
Friday evening music will start at 7 p.m. with Sammie Doolittle and Blue Zarkanna, followed by the 10-piece Charleston band, The Esquires.
Saturday, Myron Duffield, the King of the Calliope Players, will be playing a concert as well as playing throughout the day.
There will also be a host of other live music performances including Joey Wilcoxon, Frank Boles and his High Country Band and others.
Call the Point Pleasant River Museum at 304-674-0144 or go online at www.pprivermuseum.com.
Charleston Sternwheel Regatta
The granddaddy of area regattas, the Charleston Sternwheel Regatta, runs 5 to 11 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Aug. 28-29 and noon to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 30-31.
As always there are boat races, river activities, children's carnival, distance run and local and national acts, including Morris Day and The Time on Thursday, a rock concert with Puddle of Mudd on Friday, country singer Jo Dee Messina on Saturday and Blues Traveler on Sunday.
Those free concerts begin at 8 p.m.
Some of the other highlights include A Taste of Charleston that runs noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Charleston Civic Center's, Grand Hall.
There's also the almost-famous Regatta Funeral Parade at 5 p.m. Saturday, the Hot Air Balloon Lift Off at 6 p.m. Saturday and the region's best fireworks at 10 p.m. Sunday.

Rocking on the river
Portsmouth, Ohio's annual River Days celebration is known for its great parade (that's at 11 a.m. Saturday) as well as a ton of cool, live music nightly down along the Ohio River.
There are also carnival rides, concessions, crazy games and nightly national acts.
Music starts about 6 p.m. each day and national acts hit the stage at 9 p.m.
The Buckinghams play Thursday night, Flynnville Train is Friday night, The Fabulous Thunderbirds play Saturday night and at 9 p.m. Sunday The Rock and Roll All Stars, a classic rock group whose members were part of such great bands as Rare Earth, Sugarloaf and Iron Butterfly, will perform. River Days is capped off with fireworks at 10 p.m. Sunday.

Never a no show in Catlettsburg
It's just another Labor Day Monday, and that means the quaint town of Catlettsburg, Ky., on the banks of the Big Sandy and Ohio Rivers, flips the neon lights and gets turned into the Tri-State's largest honky-tonk.
Country music legend George Jones rides back into town for his regular Labor Day gig at 10 p.m., topping off a night that also includes Georgette Jones at 7; Janie Fricke at 8 p.m., and Gene Watson at 9 p.m.
Catlettsburg gets the party started at 10 a.m. Monday with its almost-famous Labor Day parade, as well as arts, crafts and activities throughout downtown.
Vintage riverboat racing
It's a road-trip but if you like old-school racing, you can head to Wheeling this weekend where Heritage Port is hosting the Wheeling Vintage Raceboat Regatta Friday through Sunday, Aug. 29-31.
Watch as vintage boats run on the Ohio River from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 30-31.
Vendors will be present, and there will be children's activities. All regatta events feature free admission. Proceeds will benefit the Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center in Wheeling.
