HUNTINGTON -- Saddle up for a weekend of Wild West fun during the 17th annual Wild West Days in Huntington's Old Central City.
Old Central City, renowned for its antique, specialty and gift shops, homestyle restaurants, markets and museums, closes off three blocks of 14th Street West for the three-day event that begins Friday. Admission is free.
"This is really great for families because they can come out to this laid-back festival and walk in the streets and not have to worry about the kids," said Joanna Sexton, a member of the Old Central City Association. Sexton owns Hattie & Nan's. "The festival is much bigger this year than last year. We have a lot of folks coming in and the streets should be pretty full."
Located near the farmer's market is the event's Antique Market and Fair, with local as well as out-of-town vendors present all weekend. On Friday, kids can get a lesson in shooting marbles before a tournament at 6:30 p.m. Each day, the street will be filled with saloon girls, strolling musicians and metal crafters, as well as food vendors offering everything from pulled pork to Native American cuisine. Kids can enjoy clowns and face painting, among other activities.
Live entertainment will fill the gazebo each day, including gospel singers Sunday morning and performances by the Harmonica Club and Freight Train. The police department and Safety Town will be on hand, as will the "We Are Marshall" fire truck. A live flower sale is scheduled and kids can have fun climbing and sliding on inflatables.
Saturday, an antique car show is scheduled.
All events are "rain or shine," with the exception of the car show.
One of the highlights of the weekend is the gun fighters show, which will feature Catlettsburg's own Gate City Gunslingers.
"The whole weekend is a nice opportunity for everyone to get together for just the cost of a hot dog and lemonade," Sexton said. "Come out and see who we are or see us again and have a good time."
Festival hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
