GOOD EATS: Pullman adds Mexican fare as fast food option
HUNTINGTON -- Visitors to Pullman Square have a new fast food option.
Dos Amigos Mexican Restaurant first opened its doors in December. The restaurant will expand to include a Margarita Cantina later this month. Dos Amigos is the brainchild of Jon Self and Mark Stokes, the owners of the Hall of Fame Cafe chain. Self and Stoke also run a successful Ohio-based chain of restaurants called Los Margaritas.
"The owners have nearly 70 years of experience in the restaurant business between them," said Matthew Greene, the general manager of Dos Amigos. "We're hoping to have as many as nine different locations opened by the end of the year.
"They were contacted by the owners of Pullman Square after Moe's closed. It took about 39 days from acquisition of the location to opening. In February, we are going to expand to include a margarita bar."
Dos Amigos' menu is simple -- customers can choose between a burrito, tacos or a salad (with or without the crispy tortilla "burrito bowl"). Customers then choose between a selection of meats, salsas and extras such as cilantro lime rice or black beans.
"What sets Dos Amigos apart is that we only use the special ingredients," Greene said. "Our chicken comes in fresh. Our steak comes in fresh, and we marinade it ourselves. All of our ingredients are made three or four times a day.
"We make all of our salsas, including corn salsa and pico de gallo from scratch. One of the things we try to let our customers in on is our cilantro lime rice, which has a unique flavor that I don't think you can really find anywhere else around here."
All entrees share a price based on their meats. A chicken-based burrito or order of three tacos costs $4.99, while a pork-based dish costs $5.99.
Once the Margarita Cantina bar is open, customers will be able to order a variety of beers (cervezas) and mixed drinks. Customers can purchase bottles of "Jarritos" a popular line of fruit-flavored Mexican soft drinks.
There is one beverage the restaurant is not serving at this time. At the bottom of the menu listed along the various prices is this note "Coffee ... go to Starbucks."
"The owners drew on their experience from the Los Margaritas restaurants and tried to simplify what we have," Greene said. "We want to make sure that the food is as good as we can possibly make it, but we want to keep it quick and simple. We want to make sure that we give the best guest service that we possibly can."
