QUEEN: The 2014 Barboursville Fall Fest Queen and Teen Queen pageant was Aug. 9 at the Barboursville Middle School with Casey Lassiter crowned as the 2014 Barboursville Fall Fest Queen and Olivia Hutchison as the 2014 Barboursville Fall Fest Teen Queen. Runners-up for queen were Lora Rutherford, Hailey Hinchman, Taylor Pickens and Heather Naples. Runners-up for teen queen were Katie Riedel, Miranda Chaffins, Zoe Spencer and Hannah Osburn. Emily Kinner and The Fringe provided entertainment. Beverly Mills is the pageant director. The Barboursville Fall Fest is Sept. 17-20.
CONGRATS: Congratulations to Neal and Earlene Adkins of Barboursville who celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary today. All of their family will join them this evening for a celebration dinner at Red Lobster. Neal, a 1955 Barboursville High School graduate and a Marshall University grad, is a certified public accountant who retired from Marshall University where he was a professor and chairman of the accounting department. Earlene, also a Marshall grad, is retired from the Cabell County Board of Education where she was a supervisor of special education. They are the parents of Melissa and her husband, Michael Newman, and grandchildren, Taylor, Steven and Ashlee; Sarah and her husband, Joshua Harless, and grandchildren, Aaron, Gentry and Katelynn; and Neal and his wife, Mary, and grandchildren, Grace and Lily.
LUNCHEON: The Democratic Women's Club of Cabell County has its monthly luncheon at 12:30 p.m. Aug. 23 at the Barboursville Moose Lodge, 2586 Eastern Heights Shopping Center. Featured speakers will be House of Delegates candidates, Lauren Plymale and Sean Hornbuckle. Other Democratic candidates will have the opportunity to speak briefly. ANTIQUES: The Pilot Club of Huntington will have its major fundraiser of the year, the Pilot Club Antique Show, Aug. 22-24 at the Big Sandy Superstore Conference Center with more than 30 dealers representing more than 10 states with exquisite antiques, collectibles, and vintage modern finds. Tickets are $6 at the door. A silent auction will be Aug. 22-23. The Pilot Club is an organization that raises money and awareness for brain injuries and disease such as Alzheimer's disease, chemical dependency, traumatic brain injuries, developmental, emotional, and mental disabilities. FAITH: Faith in Action of the River Cities, 200 19th St., Huntington, will have an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 18 in celebration of its one-year anniversary in its "new" facility. Faith in Action is a volunteer organization that provides vital, non-medical assistance free of charge to elderly and chronically disabled adults. Volunteer caregivers take seniors to appointments, assist with grocery shopping, provide daily telephone reassurance calls, plus many other services.
