Cold Stone Creamery a downtown weekend staple

Mar. 21, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Based out of Scottsdale, Ariz., Cold Stone Creamery is a popular ice cream shop that helped set-off a fad for ice cream and frozen yogurt shops where customers choose from an assortment of "Mix-ins."

The Huntington location at Pullman Square opened in 2005 and has been a weekend staple for many people.

While the demand for frozen desserts traditionally cools off in the winter season, the store offers ice cream cakes, cupcakes and other desserts for parties. For health conscious customers, Cold Stone is also now selling frozen yogurt in two new flavors: Banana Bread Batter and Chocolate Fudge Brownie. The chain also offers two lines of fruit smoothies, one of which is made with Splenda.

The shop also has warm desserts with ice cream toppings for $4.99. There's the Churro Caramel Crave, the Chocolate Lava Meltdown, the "No Fair" Funnel Cake, the "Brownie ala Coldstone," and the "Hot For Cookie" Chocolate Chip Cookie topped with cookie batter ice cream.

"This was one of the first few places to open at Pullman Square," said Meredith Henderson, co-owner of the Huntington franchise. "The corporate chain initially decided to open a store in this location and we saw an add in the paper to own the store. We drove down, looked around and loved it. So we decided to own the franchise.

"Easter is coming around and we sell a lot of cakes and ice cream cupcakes around the holidays," Henderson added. "They can be themed to Easter, other holidays or birthdays. The cakes start at $21.99 for a small. We can make a cake large enough to serve as many as 50 people. We need customers to call 24 hours ahead for custom orders."

Of course the ice cream shop offers its signature ice cream starting at $3.19 for a "like-it" size cup to $3.79 for a large "Got to have it" size. Customers can select individual toppings to be mixed in or choose one of the "Signature Creations" ranging from $3.65 to $4.29.

"I would say our most popular flavor of ice cream is sweet cream, but cake batter is very popular," Henderson said. "My favorite creation is the Cookie-Don't You Want Some, but our most popular by far is the Birthday Cake Remix."
