Camp Fifth Avenue
HUNTINGTON -- The city of Huntington Foundation, Inc. is working on its Camp Fifth Avenue, a summer camp at Huntington City Hall led by theater veterans Eddie Harbert and Coni Anthony.
Harbert said early registration for the first camp, which is 9 a.m. to noon, June 10-28, is May 1. Registration is $275 until May 1 and then $300 after that.
For that camp, participants ages 6 to 11 will be performing the musical "Captain Louie Jr." as well as helping make some costumes and the set. Performances will be June 28-29 at the Jean Carlo Stephenson Auditorium at Huntington City Hall.
For older students ages 12 to 17, another camp is set to run 9 a.m. to noon July 15 through Aug. 2. That camp will be working up "Fame Jr." with performances are set for Aug. 2-3 at the auditorium.
Early registration for that camp is set for June 1. Cost is $275 for early registration and $300 for the regular registration.
Harbert said they do have some scholarships available for students in need. Folks are asked to call him at 304-544-2831 to request an application for scholarship and for camp. People need to do that by the end of April.
Also, Harbert said that while they do have some donations for scholarships, they are also still accepting donations to help more students attend the camp. There are 20 spots for each camp.
This is the second year for the camp which has kids making a show from scratch from building the sets and helping make costumes to performing and doing the tech.
"They build everything and then put on a show," Harbert said. "It's a pretty intense three hours every day."
