Daniello's adding wraps as lighter option

HUNTINGTON -- A pizzeria and sandwich shop with 24 years of history in the area Daniello's is famous for serving some of the best pizzas in a city filled with pizzerias. To kick off the summer season the venerable pizzeria has introduced a selection of hot and cold tortilla wraps as a healthier alternative to sandwiches.

Daniello's owner James Fox sees the menu as reflecting the changes in downtown Huntington.

"We're seeing a culture change in downtown Huntington. We are excited about the Paul Ambrose Trail for Health and all the new things that are happening in Huntington," Fox said, noting how he has been inspired by the work of the late Dr. Paul Ambrose, who is the inspiration for the Paul Ambrose Trail for Health which is being built throughout the Huntington area. "His father Kenneth Paul Ambrose taught me a lot about people and organizations and how things work. I get so excited every time I read an article about the trail for health."

Fox also noted how he is pleased to be part of the improved look of downtown.

"With the new leadership downtown I think we're headed in the right direction," he said. "I'm seeing a lot of things happening and getting cleaned up. We're trying to make downtown more welcoming. People are coming downtown more and downtown is building. We're trying to be part of the new downtown. "

The new wraps sell for $6 and come with chips and a drink.

"We have a new chicken salad wrap that is really delicious," Fox said. "We also have a summer salad wrap that we serve cold. There is also a hot chicken Teriyaki wrap. We now also have pizza chips which is sort of an Italian version of chips and salsa. For dessert we also have cinnamon chips we serve with homemade icing. We started working on the new menu in April and started implementing it at the beginning of May."

Fox hopes the new, lighter menu will inspire more walk-in business.

Of course the restaurant will continue to serve a wide selection of sandwiches, salads and it's classic pizza.

"Our pizza was voted Best in the Tri-State in 2012 by readers of The Herald-Dispatch," Fox said. "Our pizza is classic. We use a spice mix that only Daniello's uses. What's also important and our method. We use fine ingredients but our method of cooking is why our pizza is so good. We par bake our dough first and our pizza sauce is an original recipe we make everyday. I think it's the best in town. There's usually nothing left after someone has a Daniello's Pizza."

Daniello's is located at 1206 4th Ave. next to Comic World. The restaurant is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and closed on Saturday and Sunday. Once Marshall University students return in the fall, it is also open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays. It is closed on Sundays year-round.
