48th annual River Recreation Festival begins Wednesday
GALLIPOLIS, Ohio -- The 48th annual River Recreation Festival will open at 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 3 in the Gallipolis City Park.
"We certainly have progressed during the last 48 years, to be able to offer a four-day event, featuring amusement rides, entertainment, contests and games, a parade, a live auction and of course, fireworks," said Lorie Neal, executive director of the Gallia County Chamber of Commerce, in a news release. "In observance of Independence Day, the festival began with just fireworks, at the Riverfront, sponsored by the Gallipolis Fire Department. It has grown each year and become a great place to go for the entire family."
This year's festival will include carnival rides from Michael's Amusements, food and craft vendors, pageants, concerts and more.
Wednesday's entertainment will feature Two River Junction on the main stage to close the evening. Prior to the concert will be the Junior Miss and Queen's Scholarship pageant.
Thursday, July 4, will feature baby contests in the morning and the French Art Colony's art show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Amusement rides will be available all afternoon and evening. The Rotary Mile will precede the Independence Day Parade, with the theme the Many Faces of America's Freedom.
Following the parade will be the Live Auction on the main stage. A highlight of the auction is room and board for a student for one year at the University of Rio Grande. Entertainment will be Dirty Gunnz from Nashville.
Friday's events begin at 5 p.m., with the 3rd Annual Wiener Dog Race scheduled at 5:30 pm. Entertainment during the evening will feature Open Rail, singer/songwriter Shelby Merry and local favorite, Stillwater.
Saturday will be Kids Day. There will be a variety of games and contests for all ages, all day long. New this year is the Minute to Win It game in the afternoon. There will be a prize giveaway for children every 30 minutes from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Gospel music will go from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday.
The four day event will conclude when the Ohio Valley Symphony will present its 5th Annual Summer Elizabeth Concert Patriotic Pops, a free concert, featuring the vocal group, SEVEN. The Orchestra will be playing three favorites by America's greatest living film composer, John Williams, two from "Star Wars" and one from "E.T."
Throughout the four days, Split the Pot tickets will be sold, with the winner announced between the Orchestra concert and fireworks.
