Area students earn dean's lists honors

HUNTINGTON -- A number of area students have been named to the dean's lists at their respective colleges and universities.

Sarah Kathleen Hayes of Huntington has been named to the Dean's List at Radford University for the spring 2013 semester.

She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Hayes. She is a senior dance major.

Emily A. Spangler of Huntington has been named to the Dean's List at Shepherd University for the fall 2012 semester.

Those named to the Dean's List at Shawnee State University include Kevin Colley of Summitt, a sports studies major, and Daniel Jones of Ashland, a nursing major, were named the President's List at Shawnee State University.

Emily Dearfield of Ashland, a physical therapy major; Ina Stephens of Grayson, a physical therapy major; Kimberly Waggoner of Grayson, a physical therapy major; and Samantha Cumpton of Huntington, an occupational therapy assistant major.

Zachary Dougherty of Barboursville, a mechanical engineering major, was named to the Dean's List at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for the spring quarter. He is the son of Thomas and Karla Dougherty of Barboursville.

Crystal Johnson, Bradley Reed and Caitlin Teetor from Putnam County were named to President's List at Fairmont State University.

Michelle Tompkin and Brittany Williams from Putnam County were named to the Dean's List at Fairmont State University.

Diane Dawley of Huntington was named to the Dean's List at the University of Akron for the spring 2013 semester. He is majoring in biochemistry.

Rachel Parlock of Huntington was named to the Dean' List at the University of Hartford in Connecticut for the spring 2013 semester.

Katherine Hughes and Kelsey Patrick, both of Hurricane, were named to the Dean's List at Savannah College of Art and Design for the spring 2013 quarter.

John Klug of Hurricane was named to the Honor List at Oxford College, a two-year liberal arts division of Emory University, for the spring 2013 semester.

Thomas E. Drown of Huntington was named the Dean's List at Virginia Military Institute. Cadet Drown is majoring in history.

Students place second in state competition

BARBOURSVILLE -- Barboursville Middle School students Shamil Patel and Andy Michael placed second place this year in a video contest sponsored by the West Virginia State Bar.

Their category was "The Constitution in Our Lives."

Last year, the boys won first place.
