MILITARY: Air Force Airman Adam D. Carr graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas. Adam is son of Lorita Carr of Henderson and nephew of Ginia Huffman of Point Pleasant. He is a 2011 Point Pleasant High graduate.


CLASS: Hurricane Police Department conducts a Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) class for women from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Hurricane City Hall. The class continues each Wednesday for eight weeks. The fee is $50. Call Cpl. J.R. Payne, 304-741-4872.


CHAT: It’s always great to see the sweet smiles and hear kind words of Sue Dotson, a St. Mary’s Medical Center employee. Sue is the daughter of the late John and Kathleen Gibson, wonderful neighbors of mine for a number of years.


PERFORMANCE: Mountain Stage with Larry Groce, Ani DiFranco, Dawes, Dave Mason and Red Baraat begins at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, at Charleston’s Clay Center. Tickets are $30. Call 304-561-3570.


HOME: My mother, Nada Lucas, is currently home after a six-day stay (three in cardiovascular ICU and three on fourth floor) in St. Mary’s Medical Center. She is scheduled for more tests and possibly surgery in the near future. Although a close call, we were blessed to keep her a while longer. Thanks for prayers and thoughts during this time and to the hospital personnel for showing such good care and friendliness.


FUNDRAISER: Marshall Artists Series’ annual “Uncorked!” fundraiser featuring more than 60 varieties of wine is from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at Frederick Building. General festival tickets are $40. The kick-off event for the fundraiser is “An Evening in Argentina,” beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at 21 @ The Frederick. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Music is by The Mielgo Trio, direct from Buenos Aires. Tickets are $100. For reservations, call 304-529-0222.


SHOCK: In August, Delores Reed of Huntington didn’t show visible signs of illness when she surprisingly showed up with my birthday cake and pie. A month later, I was totally shocked to hear she is terminally ill. This fine lady and wonderful dessert baker is in my prayers and thoughts.


CONCERT: A performance featuring Darrell Webb Band begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at Mountaineer Opry House, Milton. Doors and concessions open at 5 p.m. Tickets are $15; $12 seniors; and $5 seniors/children. Call 304-743-5749.


SEMIFINALISTS: Five Cabell Countians were among area high school seniors named as semifinalists in the 59th annual National Merit Scholarship program. They include Zachary B. Stevens, Huntington High; Titus R. Willis, Grace Christian; Ian S. Burcl-Gonzalez, Cart J. Sutton and Brodie T. Wallace, Cabell Midland High School. Others include Hunter H. Schenewark, Fairland High; Dennis B. Chertkovsky, Joshua A. Hill, Tyler Jones, Shakthi Raman and Elijah G. Spade, Winfield High.


COMEDY: One of the top 100 standup comedians of all time, per Comedy Central, is coming to Huntington in early October. Actor and Comedian Sinbad performs his comedy show at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, at Big Sandy Superstore Arena. Call 800-745-3000.
