Shonet's Country Cafe boasts variety

May. 02, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

MILTON -- With more than 22 years of history in the community of Milton, Shonet's Country Café (formerly Granny K's) has always been with the family of current owner Shonet Holley.

The cozy, friendly restaurant is known for offering home cooked meals and a daily selection of desserts. Because of the wide menu and family atmosphere it's a popular spot for breakfast, lunch and dinner or at the very least a place to grab a slice of pie with coffee.

"We've been in the restaurant business all our life since we were young," said Cherlyn Seay, manager and sister of owner Shonet Holley. "We opened in March of 1991. We remodeled about seven years ago when we changed the name, but the menu has pretty much stayed the same over the years."

Dinners at Shonet's include Roast Turkey Breast with gravy and homemade dressing ($9.25) as well as Pork Chops ($9.75). There's also a Chicken Stir Fry ($9.75) and Sonnet's Spaghetti ($8.95). The restaurant features a salad bar and has a weekly Sunday special of Baked Steak or Chicken and Dumplings.

On weekdays the cafe has an express lunch menu where customers can choose an entrée with a choice of fries, soup, or a side salad. These include Pork Bar-B-Que, a half pound grilled hamburger and a Hot Ham and Cheese. There are also daily lunch and dinner specials. Dinner specials range from $7.95 to $9.95.

The restaurant enjoys a lot of local support.

"The local businesses like the Blenko Glass company send us a lot of business," Seay said. "The Welcome Center down in Huntington sends us a lot of business."

Perhaps the diner is best known for its ever changing assortment of desserts.

"Normally we have about eight or nine desserts," Seay said. "They are all made right here. Our most popular pie is probably coconut cream pie. We also have blueberry, cherry, apple, butterscotch, chocolate cream and pecan. In the fall we also do pumpkin pies. Shonet also makes Butterfinger cakes, strawberry cakes and mandarin orange cake."
