Margarita's Mexican Grill & Bar now open

Nov. 14, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Huntington residents were saddened to see longtime Tex-Mex restaurant Chili Willi's close its doors, but a new Mexican restaurant has opened in that location.

Margarita's Mexican Grill & Bar is part of a small family of Mexican restaurants that includes "Campestre" in Princeton and Beckley, as well as "La Roca" in Cross Lanes. The building received an extensive overhaul before the new restaurant opened.

"It took them a long time to open this new restaurant because they wanted to do a good job and they had to work on the other restaurants," said Ernesto Zamudio, a waiter at Margarita's. "It took about seven or eight months of work at least. One of the biggest projects was turning the patio area into a fully walled-in space."

The menu features a wide variety of traditional Mexican fare such as fajitas, burritos and quesadillas. The menu also includes an assortment of steak, chicken and seafood. One of the signature items is "Pina Loca" which is pineapple stuffed with grilled steak, chicken, shrimp and chorizo sausage along with onions, bell peppers, tomatoes and cheese ($13.99). Another specialty is "Shrimp Toledo" which is bacon wrapped shrimp marinated in adobo sauce ($12.99).

"We have a little bit of everything on the menu, and we brought in one of our best cooks to get this restaurant off to a good start," Zamudio said. "I would say the burritos are very popular. The 'Super Burrito' has a little bit of everything, and we have plenty of seafood items like the fish tacos. We added a few new dishes that aren't in the old restaurants. Everyone seems to like the Shrimp Toledo. One of my favorites is the Fajitas Marinas. If you like seafood you get all three: shrimp, scallops and grilled tilapia."

The restaurant also features a full service bar featuring domestic and imported beers, wine and of course a selection of margaritas. Desserts include fried ice cream, churros, flan and key lime pie.

Margaritas is located at 1314 4th Ave., Huntington. It is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, noon to 11 p.m. Saturday and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday. The bar may be open late on weekends depending on demand. Cash and all major credit cards are accepted.
