Cabell students earn awards at several competitions
HUNTINGTON -- Students at schools throughout the county were recognized in multiple competitions during the first week of November.
Illustrate Your Favorite Book: Five students were announced as the winners of the "Illustrate Your Favorite Book" contest, which was open to all elementary students in Cabell County.
Each school submitted one winning poster per grade for kindergarten through fifth grade.
The winners are Emma Williams, Kindergarten, Central City Elementary; Jacob Williams, first grade, Nichols Elementary; Jack Erwin, second grade, Davis Creek Elementary; Ben Fischer, third grade, Meadows Elementary; Emma Londeree, fourth grade, Davis Creek Elementary; and Zada Porter, fifth grade, Altizer Elementary.
The students will be recognized during the next regular meeting of the Cabell County Board of Education at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, at the Cabell County Schools central office.
Arts and Bots: After six weeks of intense work, four students from Barboursville Middle School were named the winners in the Marshall University June Harless Center's "Arts and Bots" competition.
The students and their winning projects were:
FIRST PLACE: Nick Harmon, Steve Ball and Zach Force: Kung Fu Panda
SECOND PLACE: Kelly Whitmore and Channing Varnum: Dragon
THIRD PLACE: Griffin Adkins, Chad Heiner and Brett Armbruster: Dolphin
FOURTH PLACE: Morgan Christian and Rayen Ciccolella: Elephant
Representatives of the Harless Center have submitted the projects to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
Carnegie Mellon coordinates the "Arts and Bots" project nationwide, and the Barboursville students' projects will travel with representatives of Carnegie Mellon as they present at various Arts and Bots conferences nationwide.
The students all worked with their teacher, Doug Force, in his seventh-grade advanced math class. They were challenged to create the robots and then tell what mathematics were involved in their function including geometrical shapes, angles of measure, working parts movement, and the timing of sound and movement.
The students then did a final presentation in the Barboursville Middle School auditorium, and the entire student body was given the chance to observe each of the projects.
