WV 5K Championship offers free classes, early registration

May. 19, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- If you want to be ready for The Herald-Dispatch West Virginia 5K Championship this June, a series of classes are planned at the Marshall University Recreation Center.

The championship is planned for Saturday, June 22, in downtown Huntington. Classes start Tuesday and Thursday, May 21 and 23, at the Marshall University Recreation Center. Race director Pat Riley says the free classes are a good idea for those who are running in their first 5k.

"I felt that we can help bring more people into the running community by partnering with the Rec Center to provide these free classes to those who have never run a 5K before," Riley said in a prepared release.

For more information about the classes, contact Michele Muth at pallante1@marshall.edu or at 304-696-2943.

The Herald-Dispatch West Virginia 5k will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 22, at Pullman Square in downtown Huntington.

Early registration is $20 before Wednesday, June 5. After that registration is $25, but runners must register by Monday, June 17, to qualify for a T-shirt. Race day registration is $30. Entry fees are non-refundable. Online registration is at www.WV5K.com. Participants may also send a print registration form to: WV 5K Championship, 613 Shaw Street, Barboursville, WV 25504. Make checks payable to WV 5K Championship. Packet pickup is from 5 to 6 p.m. Friday, June 21, at the Pullman Plaza Hotel.

The championship race has been growing in popularity each year with 519 finishing the race in 2009 and more than 800 people finishing the race in 2012.

"The Herald-Dispatch West Virginia 5K Championship was very successful last year, but this year, we want it to be even bigger and better," Riley said in a release. "I encourage everyone to register early. We have a lot of different and exciting incentives this year. This is one of the largest and fastest races in Huntington, and this year, the race falls on West Virginia's 150th anniversary weekend. What better way to celebrate West Virginia than by entering the West Virginia 5K Championship?"

The proceeds from the race will be used to fund efforts to curb childhood obesity in United Way of the River Cities' five-county service area.

"The money raised by the race will be used to fund local efforts to help prevent childhood obesity," said Laura Gilliam, United Way executive director. "United Way of the River Cities will release a special Request for Proposals. Funding will target those outcomes that reduce risk factors for childhood obesity."

In 2012, the race raised $19,000 for United Way of the River Cities.

This year, the West Virginia 5K Championship is the office 5K race for the West Virginia Senior Sports Classic. For more information, visit www.WVSSC.com.
