My Dad's Pizzeria packs its pies with a pound of cheese

Jan. 24, 2013 @ 08:45 AM

CANNONSBURG, Ky. — In 1989 Bob Gayheart didn’t think the local pizzerias were up to par, and he decided if he wanted something done right he was going to have to do it himself.

He purchased a restaurant called Long’s Pizza on Bellefonte Road in Flatwoods, Ky. The next year, Gayheart moved his business up the road to its current location at 635 Bellefonte Road, and at his daughter’s suggestion renamed it My Dad’s Pizza. Gayheart’s family ran two “My Dad’s Pizzaria” restaurants until selling them in 2006, but they would flounder under the new management. In 2011 Mark Pratt, Gayheart’s son-in-law, decided to buy back the original Flatwoods store, and in December 2012 a second location opened in Ashland’s Kyova Mall.

“We serve a New York style pizza with a real sweet taste to the sauce,” Pratt said. “What we are real well known for is the cheese. We put over a pound of cheese on an 18-inch pizza. Our deluxe pizza weighs over nine pounds. It has everything from pepperoni, mushrooms, sausage, banana peppers, ham, bacon, beef, to green and black olives.”

According to Pratt, the secret to a good pizza starts with the cheese.

“When you pick up a piece of our pizza it doesn’t fold down or drip off,” Pratt said. “We use real mozzarella cheese, we don’t use artificial. It costs a little more, but it is worth it.  If you put out a good product, if people get what they pay for, they’ll come back. We have had repeat customers who have been here for over 20 years that stop in two to three times a week. They know it’s going to be just as good as the last time. We don’t want to cut back on the consistency. We buy the best ingredients. If you start with junk you‘re going to end up with junk.”

Pratt is currently in talks to open a third My Dad’s Pizzaria in the Huntington area.

Pizzas start at $6 for an 8-inch cheese pizza and vary in size up to a $16.25 for an 18-inch cheese. The menu also includes a host of sandwiches including a Meatball Sandwich ($3.89 for a small, $4.89 large) and a Stromboli ($5.10 small, $5.50 large). There is also pasta such as spaghetti ($6.69 small, $7.59 large), and a choice of salads.

“Our spaghetti sauce uses actual ground chuck rather than hamburger,” Pratt said. “Our salads are also the biggest and best around. If you can find a better salad I’ll buy you one.”

My Dad’s Pizzaria is located in the food court at the Kyova Mall. It is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and is closed on Sunday. Cash and all major credit/debit cards are accepted. For delivery and carry-out orders, call 606-928-3237. For information on the Flatwoods store and a full menu, www.mydadspizza.com.
